Grey water is domestic waste water that comes from plumbing fixtures and has no substantial contact with faecal matter.

Wastewater from the 4th Main Road of VGN Nagar and the 1st Main Road of Ashok Brindavan Nagar has been pooling in a massive, low-lying vacant area.

Residents alleged this stagnant water was seeping into the home wells, contaminating household overhead tanks and threatening a major public health crisis. The issue stems from a low-lying tract of land running behind VGN Nagar.

Thirty years ago, this land was earmarked by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), which laid a massive pipeline 20 feet underground, carrying water from Chembarambakkam Lake to the Valasaravakkam Pumping Station via Iyyappanthangal and Porur.

However, because the land is privately owned, the owners excavated vast amounts of soil, turning the land into a deep, low-lying pool. Consequently, neighbouring buildings began illegally discharging their grey water directly into this hollow.

Pratheesja Illangovan, a resident of VGN Nagar, noted that residents in her complex unknowingly consumed foul-smelling water for a week. “We discovered our well was heavily contaminated by the stagnant pool, which is fed by illegal grey water discharge from buildings on both sides of the Metro Water alignment, specifically along the 4th Main Road of VGN Nagar and the 1st Main Road of Ashok Brindavan Nagar,” she explained.

Echoing her concerns, P Vigneshwaran, from the same apartment complex, pointed out that this was the second time their water source has been compromised in recent years. “It poses severe health risks for all age groups, even though we now only use the water for non-drinking purposes,” he averred.

Despite continuous escalation, residents blamed authorities for their lackadaisical approach to their grievances. “Though we complained to the Kundrathur BDO, CMWSSB, and the local panchayat, no action has been taken,” Illangovan lamented.

Residents are now demanding that the Kundrathur health officer deploy an enforcement team to permanently block the illegal outlets and construct an underground sewerage network. An official in the Kundrathur BDO said, “I’ll instruct officials to inspect the place and take immediate action to rectify the issue.”

Attempts to reach the Kundrathur health officer proved futile.

Power shutdown on July 16 in Chennai's Avadi, Porur, Duca, a new restaurant and café in Alwarpet, hopes to offer exactly that.

With a menu that brings together flavours from around the world, a spacious garden seating area and cosy interiors, it is designed as a place where guests can slow down and spend time at their own pace. The restaurant occupies a space that has been home to an eatery for nearly a decade. Rather than completely changing its character, the team has retained the warmth people associated with the location while giving it a fresh identity.

The name Duca, which means Duke in Italian, reflects the elegant yet relaxed feel they wanted to create. “There are plenty of restaurants where you finish your meal and leave. We wanted to create a place where people could stay a little longer. You can meet friends, have a business discussion, enjoy a coffee or even sit with your laptop and work for a couple of hours,” says Yoganandan, who runs the place along with his wife, Valarmathy.

Truffle and Mushroom Filo crisp

One of the biggest attractions is the outdoor dining area. The garden has been transformed into a dining space that can accommodate around 80 guests, while the indoor restaurant has seating for about 45. The outdoor section is pet-friendly, making it a good choice for those who enjoy dining with their pets.

The interiors strike a balance between contemporary design and familiar touches. Fans of television sitcoms will notice references to the famous orange couch from Friends and artwork inspired by

Monk’s Café from Seinfeld. These details have been added subtly, giving the space a sense of nostalgia without overpowering the overall design.

While the restaurant draws inspiration from European cuisine, the menu stretches far beyond one region. “Guests can choose from Continental, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian and Indian dishes. The idea was to create a menu that works for groups with different preferences. When families or friends dine together, everyone likes something different. We wanted to make sure there is something for everybody,” he adds.

Mirapakaya Bajji

Among the signature dishes are the Truffle and Mushroom Filo Crisp, Quesabirria Ramen Bowl, Malaysian Roti Canai, Thai Curry Rice and Indian rice bowls. “The Scotch Egg is made using techniques our chef learned while working in Scotland. Another speciality is the Fish and Chips, prepared with a whole 10-inch fillet of sea bass instead of smaller pieces, staying close to the traditional British version of the dish,” adds the restaurateur.

The dessert menu features Tres Leches, Strawberry Panna Cotta and a selection of cheesecakes. “Coffee and matcha are among the most popular beverages, with the coffee beans sourced from a plantation in Yercaud. Food is one part of the experience. We hope Duca becomes a neighbourhood space where people can meet, relax and enjoy good food without feeling rushed,” concludes Yoganandan.

Valarmathy & Yoganandan

Presidency College student held for machete attack on collegemate

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>machete,Presidency College,Attack</media:keywords>

Representative image for arrested

Representative image for arrested

CHENNAI: The city police on Monday arrested a Presidency College student for the machete attack on a fellow student near Marina Beach on Wednesday. Even Kayal Unavagam – a seafood restaurant operated by the State government – remains non-functional. The concern most frequently raised by traders was the quality of water supplied to the complex. “While Metro Water is being supplied, the existing filtration system is inadequate for the volume of water required. Sometimes water comes with a sewage smell. How will the marine life live? How will my investment sustain?” lamented a shopkeeper.

According to them, unsuitable Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), chlorine content, water hardness, acidity (pH) and water temperature affect sensitive ornamental fish, preventing them from stocking several varieties. “We cannot keep every variety of fish here. The TDS level is not right and the water temperature is also not suitable. If we stock too many fish, they develop white spot disease,” a trader said.

Another trader alleged that expensive fish have died because of unsuitable water conditions, resulting in financial losses. “I’m buying 7 litres of RO water every day to sustain my business. The government should have done better R&D.”

As a ripple effect, customers are also seen snubbed by lack of variety and options. “What we’re getting is just 1% of footfall when compared to the market in Kolathur,” a shop owner said.

While shop owners in the traditional Kolathur market pay around a monthly rent of Rs 10,000-12,000, they benefit from steady customer footfall. At the new centre, however, a trader pays Rs 15,000/month for a 20ft x 20ft shop, while the customer visits remain sparse except during parts of weekends. Also, ith only a handful of functioning shops, suppliers are unwilling to make deliveries to the new complex.

Suppliers of oxygen cylinders, who regularly deliver to the old market, do not come to the new centre because there are too few shops. “A cylinder costs around Rs 420, but I have to spend another Rs 100 to bring it here by auto, because delivery vehicles won’t come for just four shops,” a trader noted. The problem extends to live fish feed as well.

According to traders, this has created a vicious cycle. Fewer shops discourage suppliers from servicing the complex, increasing operating costs for existing businesses. The limited number of shops, in turn, keeps customers away, making other traders reluctant to relocate.

Traders also pointed to design shortcomings within the building. The complex has only passenger lifts and lacks a commercial service lift, making it difficult to transport large aquariums and equipment to upper floors.

Despite the challenges, traders acknowledged that the new complex offers several advantages over the old market, including better parking, sanitation facilities and a more organised shopping environment.

Members of the traders’ association told DT Next that they have submitted petitions to the Fisheries department seeking a substantial reduction in rent, improvements to the water treatment system and measures to reduce operating costs. “Officials recently visited the facility, heard our grievances and assured us that the issues will be examined.”

Speaking to this reporter, an official said, “We’re working on grievances but there are no problems with the water quality.”

Nonetheless, even after months of struggling, the early adopters say they have not lost faith in the project. “This has the potential to become Asia’s top ornamental fish mall,” said a trader. “The infrastructure is here. But unless the government fixes the operational issues, many traders will continue to hesitate, and this will become yet another failed government initiative.”

At this Chennai Corporation school, teachers cross the Hindi barrier for kids' sake

<atom:author><atom:name>Prithiv Raj Anbu</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371171</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Hindi,teachers,Greater Chennai Corporation schools</media:keywords>

A teacher taking class for primary class students at Chennai Middle School in Sadayankuppam near Manali

A teacher taking class for primary class students at Chennai Middle School in Sadayankuppam near Manali

CHENNAI: ‘Chup raho’ (keep quiet). ‘Baito’ (sit down). Never mind the strenuous objections to Hindi imposition in the State, the language has naturally flowed inside this Greater Chennai Corporation school classroom. For, to ensure that the students, a majority of whom hail from guest worker families, learn the lessons well, the teachers here are more than willing to meet them half-way by learning Hindi.

Of the 86 students at the GCC middle school in Sadayankuppam near Manali, 76 are children of guest workers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, who work in nearby industrial units and mills. The primary motivation for parents to send them to the school is the government's free breakfast and midday meal schemes.

Once they enrol the children, the teachers step in to do the rest. Most of the kids can understand and speak conversational Tamil, as they have been living in the city with their parents for the past few years. But reading and writing the language remain a significant challenge for them. To bridge this gap, the teachers use bilingual teaching methods, and display stories and videos in Hindi.

"As many of the students understand Hindi better, we initially teach them the names of animals and everyday objects in Hindi, and translate in English, then into Tamil," explained S Deva Kirubai, the headmaster-in-charge.

Before teaching them, the teachers themselves learn the Hindi words that the children use regularly. “For instance, we connect ‘bandar’ to monkey, and ‘murgi’ to hen. The teachers have also learned Hindi numerals and basic classroom commands like ‘baito’ (sit down), ‘khade ho jao’ (stand up), and ‘chup raho’ (be quiet)," she said.

Explaining her approach while teaching these students, S Sumathi, a permanent secondary grade teacher who handles the primary sections, said, "While we display Tamil stories on the screen, we also play the audio or video in Hindi to make them understand the story easily."

The teachers pointed out that the students were bright and responded well to the subjects like mathematics, English, and science. The dedication of the staff is paying off, as the students who have been studying there for more than three to four years can read and write.

The impact is evident in the confidence of the students. J Adithya, a Class 6 student whose father works in a nearby mill, proudly shares the knowledge gained through the teaching. "I love learning Tamil and mathematics. I've already memorised several Tirukkurals and love explaining short Tamil stories to my teachers," he said.

Recalling her early struggles, J Santhakumari, a Class 8 student who has studied here since kindergarten, said, "Initially, I faced immense hardship in reading and understanding stories in Tamil. But today, I am fluent enough to read, write, and explain the stories in Tamil. Now I even act as a student translator, helping teachers understand the needs and opinions of my juniors who struggle to communicate with the teachers."

According to the Greater Chennai Corporation, the school has 86 students in the current academic year, including 20 in kindergarten, 39 in primary classes, and 27 in Classes 6 to 8. The school is currently managed by four teachers; two of them secondary-grade government teachers and the other two School Management Committee (SMC) volunteers.

"During the door-to-door visit, we encourage the parents to send the children to school by stressing that the State government provides food and notebooks free of cost. However, due to the nature of their parents' jobs, these students hardly come for four to five months," said headmaster-in-charge Deva Kirubai.

The teaching staff are now pressing for the appointment of a bilingual teacher proficient in both Hindi and Tamil, arguing that this would accelerate the students' academic progress.

Infrastructure grievances and safety are two of the main concerns that the staff have been raising. As the construction of a new building is under way, the staff and students are squeezed inside a congested, temporary structure opposite the site.

The staff alleged that the present classrooms are situated close to dense vegetation, which has become a safety hazard for the children. "Snakes move freely around the school campus. Recently, we found one coiled inside a water barrel kept just outside the school," alleged a worker.

Speaking to DT Next, residents also complained about the delayed completion deadline, noting that the old middle school building was demolished years ago. While reconstruction finally began last year, residents claim the progress slowed down following recent administrative changes.

When asked, a senior GCC official said 90 per cent of the construction work is already complete, and the finishing touches are under way. “The zonal officer and Madhavaram MLA ML Vijay Prabhu recently inspected the work and strictly instructed the contractors to expedite the remaining work for an early inauguration," the official said.

Chennai Citizen Connect: Pothole-riddled Kovilambakkam to Nemilichery road rankles residents

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>pothole,Chennai Citizen Connect,St Thomas Mount,Kovilambakkam,Nemilichery</media:keywords>

The pathetic state of Kovilambakkam-Nemilichery Road

CHENNAI: Crying foul over years of official apathy, residents have sought urgent repair of badly damaged Kovilambakkam-Nemilicherry Road. Peoples residing in both Kovilambakkam and Nemilichery respectively have pointed out the stretch between the two areas are riddled with potholes, which are filled with sewage.

The two-kilometre road connects Kovilambakkam with Nemilichery in Chromepet and serves as an important link to Velachery. It is used daily by thousands of motorists, office-goers, students and residents from localities including Arulmurugan Nagar, Nandavanam Nagar and surrounding areas.

However, the road has remained in a deteriorated condition for several years, with large potholes. According to residents, repeated complaints to the St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union have yielded little result.

Officials reportedly informed them that although the road falls within the union limits, it is maintained by the Highways Department. Residents said the Highways Department has repeatedly assured them that repair work would be taken up, but no permanent solution has been implemented.

Karthick, a regular commuter from the locality, said, as a temporary measure, authorities have been filling potholes with construction debris and loose soil. But even after light rain, the material gets washed away, exposing the potholes once again.

Residents said the poor condition of the road has led to frequent minor accidents involving two-wheelers, besides causing severe inconvenience to daily commuters. Demanding a permanent solution, residents held a protest urging both the Highways Department and the St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union to immediately repair the road and restore safe commuting conditions.

Officials from the St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union said they have already taken up the issue with the Highways Department and expressed hope that the road would be repaired soon.

Police sources said that about 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen from the house.

The victim was identified as R Vanaja, who lived with her husband, Radhakrishnan, near the old bus stand in Pazhaverkadu. Their children, a son and two daughters, are married and live separately, police said.

Radhakrishnan ran a provision store near their home while Vanaja sold idli batter from home. On Monday morning, Vanaja returned home after assisting her husband at the shop. Around noon, when Radhakrishnan came back and opened the locked house, he found Vanaja lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds on her neck.

On hearing his cries, neighbours rushed to the house and alerted the authorities.
