Opening at DakshinaChitra Museum's Kadambari Gallery on July 22, the exhibition features over 50 photographs documenting folk and community performance traditions from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The exhibition will run till August 3 and will be inaugurated by Marthanda Varma, Prince of Travancore.

Poikal Kuthirai

The photographs include art forms such as Theyyam, Kathakali, Poikkal Kuthirai, Yakshagana, Kombu Koyya and Therukoothu, among others. “Though these performances have been practised for generations, many people are still unaware of them. I've photographed these performers at temple festivals and cultural events across South India. What fascinated me most were their expressions and the way they transform themselves during a performance," says Rekha.

For the self-taught photographer, the exhibition is less about documenting the performance itself and more about drawing attention to the artistes who carry these traditions forward. Her close-up photographs focus on painted faces, expressive eyes, gestures and moments that audiences may not always notice during a live performance.

Muchilottu Theyyam

"Many people don't know that such performance traditions exist. I am happy to showcase them through my photographs. Every art form has its own story, costume and expression. I wanted people to look closely at the performers and appreciate the effort and emotion that goes into what they do,” she tells us.

The exhibition explores the idea of transformation that is central to many folk performances. Through makeup and costume, performers take on characters that have been passed down over generations. For a few hours, they step into another identity, embodying myths, rituals and stories that are deeply rooted in their communities. "Once the makeup is on and the costume is complete, they become somebody else. You can see it in their eyes and expressions. Capturing that transformation was one of the most interesting parts of this project,” Rekha says.

Damami

A recipient of the Kanavu Fellowship from the Chennai Photo Biennale, Rekha works at DakshinaChitra and has exhibited her photographs in Chennai and abroad. She has also worked on McGill University's archival project on the Gwillim sisters, two British women who documented the monuments, landscapes, flora and people of Madras in the early nineteenth century through watercolours.

With Expressions, Rekha hopes visitors will leave with a deeper appreciation of South India's folk performers and the traditions they keep alive. "These art forms are part of our cultural heritage. Through this exhibition, I want people to discover them and celebrate the artistes who continue to perform them,” she concludes.

Rekha

Rediscover South India's Forgotten Recipes at Taj Coromandel's Southern Spice

<atom:author><atom:name>Dharshini</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2502049</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Food Review,Culinary Arts,Restaurant Review</media:keywords>

Meals served

Meals served

CHENNAI: There was a time when recipes weren't measured with spoons or written in cookbooks. They were learnt by watching grandmothers patiently roast spices, stone grind masalas and stir clay pots over a slow fire.

Ancient grains found their way into everyday meals, medicinal herbs were valued as much for their healing properties as their flavour, and every region had its own culinary identity. While many of these recipes have quietly faded from today's kitchens, Southern Spice at Taj Coromandel is bringing them back through Forgotten Flavours of the South.

This limited-period culinary experience celebrates the culinary traditions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

But with countless forgotten recipes across the South, what made the team choose these particular dishes? Sous Chef T Jabaraj of Taj Coromandel says the menu was curated to represent recipes that were once deeply rooted in everyday life but are now rarely prepared.

Chef T Jabaraj

"Our concept was to bring back dishes that people have almost stopped cooking at home. We followed our grandmothers' recipes, looked at the ingredients and grains that were traditionally used, and chose dishes that best represented the culinary identity of each region," he says. Extensive research led the team to traditional recipes, conversations with home cooks and even organic farms to source heritage rice varieties that are no longer commonly available.

As the chef begins to explain the menu, the dishes arrive at the table. Starting with the Thuthuvalai Rasam, with its gentle peppery warmth and medicinal herb notes, it brings the comforting flavours of home. Thinai Paniyaram, Varagu Adai with Aviyal and Ragi Mudde with Uppu Saaru celebrate millets that once formed the backbone of South Indian diets, while accompaniments such as Ellu, Pirandai and Nellikai Thuvayal reflect ingredients that have slowly disappeared from our kitchens.

Among the stars of the meal was the Chettinad Kaalan Peratal, where mushrooms absorbed the bold flavours of freshly roasted spices, black pepper and fennel, resulting in a dish that was deeply aromatic yet balanced. Equally memorable was the Kalyana Veetu Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu, where soft lentil dumplings soaked up the tangy tamarind gravy without losing their delicate texture, paired with the rustic Kuzhiyadichan Choru, a type of rice most of us would have never heard of. The Mapillai Samba Pongal, with generous amounts of ghee, black pepper, cumin and ginger, stood out for its rich flavour.

Kalyana Veetu Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu

For the chef, authenticity begins with the ingredients themselves. "Sourcing heritage ingredients requires extra effort because they are produced in smaller quantities and are available only through trusted farmers and speciality suppliers," he explains. "Mapillai Samba and Kavuni rice have distinct texture, flavour and nutritional value, while Thuthuvalai leaves add both medicinal benefits and a unique taste. These ingredients are the heart of the recipes."

"We aimed to preserve the authenticity of every region rather than standardise the flavours. While maintaining consistency in a professional kitchen, we respected each dish's original character, ensuring guests experience the true taste of its place of origin," he explains.

"Each dish has its own unique cooking style. The Chettinad Kaalan Peratal gets its bold flavour from freshly roasted spices, fennel, black pepper and slow cooking." Jabaraj believes the Kuzhiyadichan Choru best captures the essence of the festival. Once prepared in village homes for family gatherings and festive occasions, the one-pot rice dish embodies what the menu seeks to preserve. "It reflects the wisdom of our ancestors, using locally grown ingredients, freshly ground spices and slow cooking to create a wholesome, flavourful meal. Reviving this dish is about preserving our culinary heritage and sharing those stories with a new generation."

The meal concludes with desserts such as Karupatti Kavuni Arisi Halwa, Ragi Simili Urundai and, the cherry on the cake, the wholesome Navadhanya Payasam. They bring a comforting and nostalgic touch to the feast. Chef Jabaraj proudly points out that every dessert is sweetened only with jaggery, making that extra spoonful feel a lot less guilty. Just when it seemed the feast had finally reached its finale, a refreshing glass of Thalicha Moru, followed by an aromatic cup of Sukku Malli Coffee, made for a fitting end to the menu.

Karupatti Kavuni Arisi Halwa, and Ragi Simili Urundai

Chennai: Roommate, her partner held for snatching woman's chain

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Ramapuram,chennai crime,Chain snatch</media:keywords>

Arrest-representative image

Arrest-representative image

CHENNAI: The police have arrested a 28-year-old woman in a chain-snatching incident at a private women's hostel in Ramapuram. MTC pays the operator Rs 80.86/km for AC buses and Rs 77.16/km for non-AC buses, subject to a minimum assured operation of 200 km per bus per day.

The RTI reply shows that MTC paid OHM Rs 80.60 crore (unaudited) during the financial year, while recovering Rs 9.51 crore (unaudited) as penalties under the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The performance data points to a steady deterioration in reliability.

Breakdowns increased from zero in June 2025 to 97 in July, 99 in August, 154 in September, 213 in October, 150 in November, 215 in December, 224 in January, 246 in February and peaked at 372 in March 2026.

Despite the rise in mechanical failures, accidents involving the GCC buses remained low. Two accidents were reported in October 2025, one in January 2026 and two in March 2026, while there were none in the remaining months.

Under the GCC agreement, the operator is required to maintain fleet availability of around 95-98%, meet reliability standards and achieve the minimum assured daily kilometres. Failure to meet these benchmarks attracts financial penalties.

While the RTI reply did not provide a break-up of the penalties, MTC officials said deductions were made every month based on OHM’s performance against priority and non-priority service standards. “The penalties are levied every month based on performance. The mechanism is intended to improve service standards and follows a globally accepted model,” a senior MTC official said.

The RTI reply, however, does not specify the reasons behind the sharp increase in breakdowns or the month-wise penalties recovered from the operator.

Chennai: Official apathy led to power outage for a month, allege Pulianthope families

<atom:author><atom:name>Vasudevan S</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371197</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Pulianthope,Power outage,apathy</media:keywords>

Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd

Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd

CHENNAI: Four families in Pulianthope have sought action against a foreman working for Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL), alleging that they were left without electricity for more than a month due to official inaction and that the official behaved disrespectfully towards women during the repair process.

According to a petition submitted by residents of TVK Nagar 9th Street, an underground power cable supplying electricity to their houses developed a fault on May 15, cutting off power to all four households.

Despite filing a complaint with the Pulianthope TNPDCL office and making repeated visits to follow up, the residents alleged that the repair was delayed as officials cited a shortage of staff. “Foreman Venkatesan told us that the department did not have workers to dig a trench for laying a replacement cable and asked us to arrange the work through a private contractor,” a resident alleged. “He also shared the contractor’s contact number. However, the contractor did not answer our calls, and we had to suffer without electricity for more than a month.”

According to the petition, contract workers eventually arrived on June 13 for repairs and collected Rs 2,500 from residents for digging the trench. The residents fumed that the existing main power cable remained live during the work.

When one of the residents, Subha, contacted Venkatesan for disconnecting the power supply so that the new cable could be laid safely, he replied using abusive words and was disrespectful.

INTUC state secretary V Sathiyabalan pointed out that power fault repair works should be carried out only by utility employees and not contract workers. “Handing over such works to contract workers has led to complaints of illegal collection of money from the public. Action should be taken against the officials responsible for delaying the repair work, allowing money to be collected from poor residents, and assigning the work to contract labourers,” he said.

Responding to the allegations, a TNPDCL official said that the utility had received a complaint accusing the foreman of behaving disrespectfully towards women and had initiated an inquiry. “A detailed report has been submitted by the AD to the Superintending Engineer. Appropriate action will be taken within two days of receiving official reply,” the official said.

DT Next Impact | Footpath encroachments removed on Brindavan Nagar Main in Adambakkam

Shaji's counsel sought exemption from his personal appearance, stating that he was undergoing physiotherapy for a back ailment, and requested permission for him to participate in the proceedings through video conference. The counsel also informed the court that an appeal challenging the Madras High Court's order had been filed before the Supreme Court.

Rejecting the plea, the judge observed that the Madras High Court had specifically directed Shaji to appear before the trial court on July 16, but he had failed to do so. However, he did not appear when the judgment was pronounced. The court then dismissed his plea for exemption from personal appearance, issued an NBW and directed the police to secure his presence for the hearing on the quantum of sentence.

Challenging the warrant, Shaji approached the Madras High Court, citing his back ailment and ongoing physiotherapy. Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy recalled the NBW and directed him to appear before the trial court without fail on July 16. The court emphasised that newspaper reports and social media broadcasts cannot form the basis for directing the transfer of a criminal investigation. It further observed that a court of law cannot order the transfer of a statutory investigation based on newspaper headlines or viral videos circulating on digital platforms.

The court further observed that the State police had already apprehended nine accused, collected material evidence, and secured their judicial remand. It held that invoking the court's extraordinary jurisdiction to seek transfer of the investigation solely on the basis of unverified media reports amounted to a clear deviation from the purpose of such jurisdiction. Accordingly, the writ petition was dismissed.

The petition was filed by Tirupur-based advocate J Balasubramani, seeking transfer of the investigation into the case registered by the Triplicane Police over the alleged attempt to poach a TVK MLA from Uthangarai to the CBI.

The petitioner contended that the FIR ought to have been registered by the Uthangarai Police, as the alleged offence was stated to have occurred within its territorial jurisdiction. He alleged that registration of the case at the D1 Triplicane Police Station in Chennai was driven by political convenience rather than territorial jurisdiction.

The petition further stated that, under the DVAC manual, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) is the competent agency to investigate offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and to inquire into complaints relating to bribery, corruption, and allied misconduct by public servants.

The petitioner sought transfer of the investigation from the Triplicane Police to the CBI for a fresh, comprehensive, and independent probe. He contended that the case involved allegations affecting the integrity of the democratic process and therefore warranted an independent investigation. The plea also sought an interim stay on the ongoing investigation into the alleged attempt to bribe the TVK MLA.

During the hearing, Advocate General Vijay Narayan submitted that the State police had promptly taken cognisance of the offence and arrested nine individuals. He submitted that the investigation was supported by strong evidence, including audio and video recordings, and that several key accused had been remanded to judicial custody.

He further submitted that the investigation was progressing at an impressive pace and that, based on the petitioner's unverified assertions, there was no justification for transferring the investigation to the CBI at this stage.

West Jones Road to be restored by July 20: Metro Water

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Saidapet,Chennai Metro Water,West Jones Road</media:keywords>

Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB)

Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB)

CHENNAI: Metro Water has clarified that the repair works on West Jones Road in Saidapet, which led to traffic congestion, have been completed and that road restoration will be finished before July 20.

The clarification came in response to a report published in DT Next titled 'Metro Water works choke traffic on West Jones Road in Saidapet'.

According to Metro Water, the excavation was undertaken after a road cave-in was reported at the location. At the time, the Corporation had said it planned to establish at least two such feeding areas in every zone.

While the expansion has substantially increased the number of authorised feeding locations, implementation remains uneven. Boards identifying the designated feeding spots have been installed only at select locations. None of the feeding spots currently has a dedicated shelter or covered structure, a demand both feeders and residents have been asking.

The civic body is yet to finalise a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the facilities. The absence of widespread awareness has also meant that many animal feeders continue to place food along roadsides instead of using the designated locations, defeating the purpose of concentrating feeding activities at identified spots.

GCC Veterinary Officer J Kamal Hussain said that the Corporation would identify more feeding locations in the coming months and was currently focusing on installing signboards at all designated sites. “We’ve briefly communicated with feeders and the general public, but a detailed SOP on how the feeding spots should be used and maintained is yet to be drafted,” he said.

The Corporation was also discussing whether covered shelters should be developed at the feeding zones to prevent littering and improve upkeep. “So far, we have advised feeders to keep the designated spots clean and avoid littering,” the official added.

“We fear how the locality will be if people come and feed dogs here. Just stating the feeders should take care of littering will not suffice, GCC has to act on it,” said a resident from Anna Nagar 18th Main Road.

Chennai Citizen Connect: Fear grips staff and visitors at dilapidated Potheri VAO office

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Potheri,Visitors,staff</media:keywords>

Potheri VAO office in Maraimalai Nagar Municipality in a precarious condition, (R) broken portion of the ceiling.

Potheri VAO office in Maraimalai Nagar Municipality in a precarious condition, (R) broken portion of the ceiling.

A Revenue Department official said that the condition of the building has already been brought to the notice of the government agency responsible for maintaining public buildings, and hopes that repair works will be taken up soon

CHENNAI: The VAO office in Potheri is in a bad shape, leaving government staff working under constant fear, and the public hesitant to enter the building for essential services.

The Potheri VAO office is located within the Maraimalai Nagar Municipality and witnesses a steady flow of visitors every day.

Residents visit the office for a range of government services, including patta and chitta documents, community, birth and income certificates, as well as applications for old-age pension, widow pension and other welfare schemes.

The building was constructed about 12 years ago with Kattankulathur Panchayat Union funds and has served as the VAO office since 2016. Residents checked their apartments, nearby vacant plots and surrounding areas but couldn't find any local source. When we reached out to other communities through our network, we realised the problem was widespread,” said Harsha Koda, co-founder of FOMRRA.

The federation said it had compiled reports from dozens of apartment communities across the OMR corridor, noting that the issue extends well beyond a single neighbourhood. It has also mapped the affected communities to support its complaint. FOMRRA suspects the odour could be originating from the Alathur SIDCO Pharmaceutical Industrial Estate, located south of the affected residential areas.

“Our assessment is based on the geographical spread of complaints and prevailing wind patterns, but we cannot identify the specific industrial unit, if any, responsible for the emissions,” it stated.

The federation has urged the TNPCB to conduct surprise inspections during the late-night hours when the odour is reportedly strongest, undertake continuous emission monitoring and initiate action against any unit found violating pollution norms. Residents have also urged the Chengalpattu district administration to intervene.

8 illegal water suction motors seized in Taramani

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Taramani,Motors,Illegal Water</media:keywords>

Metro Water workers inspecting pipelines

Metro Water workers inspecting pipelines

CHENNAI: The Metro Water board has intensified its drive against the illegal use of electric motors to draw drinking water from distribution pipelines, seizing eight such motors during a surprise inspection in Taramani on Thursday.

The inspection was carried out on July 16 in Ramasamy Street, Anjugam Ammal Street, Rani Ammal Street, Bharathiyar Street, Kattabomman Street and Thanthai Periyar Nagar in Ward 178 of Adyar Zone.

Metro Water officials, assisted by the police, conducted the special drive to detect illegal electric motors connected to water supply pipelines. As a child, she would compose tunes for hymns from her school diary, unaware that it would one day lead her to a career in film music.

Today, the city-based composer, vocalist and music producer has added another milestone to her journey.

She has been recognised by both the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records for holding the maximum number of music credits by an individual in a Tamil feature film.

The recognition comes for her work in the Tamil film Rail, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. For the film, Jananiy took on 10 different musical roles, something usually shared by an entire music department. "I did not plan to set a record.

I simply wanted to do justice to the film and its music. Over the years, I have always been interested not just in composing music, but also in music production, arrangements and singing. That naturally helped me take on different responsibilities for the film," she says.

For Rail, she worked as the film composer, music producer, music arranger, orchestrator, vocal producer, conductor, recording engineer, mixing engineer, playback singer and multi-instrumentalist. Jananiy's association with the film began when director Bhaskar Sakthi approached her to compose its music. The two have collaborated on several projects over the years. The film, which was initially titled Vadakkan, was later renamed Rail.

The soundtrack features five songs across different genres. One of them, Poo Pookudhu, is a Tamil folk melody that Jananiy herself sang. “One of the biggest challenges was adapting to the dialect and folk nuances of Theni. Another track, Olagam Kadaisi Vara, is a philosophical number sung by veteran singer Deva. Oliyadadhu is based on the Carnatic raga Anandabhairavi and was composed during the film's recording stage. The soundtrack also includes a folk song sung by Antony Dasan and an oppari song, for which I altered my voice to resemble that of an elderly grandmother.”

One of the highlights of the project was recording with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Sofia. Jananiy travelled to Bulgaria to conduct and record the orchestral sessions live, while the songs were mastered in London. "It was a wonderful experience working with musicians from another country. Music has no language and it was exciting to see a Tamil independent film bring together talent from different parts of the world," she tells us.

A national award recipient and a voting member of the Recording Academy for the Grammy Awards, Jananiy continues to explore both Indian and Western classical traditions in her work.

She says her openness to learning has helped her grow as a musician over the years. “I am in talks for several film projects as a music director and am also working on a multi-genre Tamil music album featuring 10 songs in collaboration with internationally acclaimed musicians, orchestras and Indian playback singers,” she concludes.

Chennai Corporation conducts safety audits, child protection awareness growing global academic footprint as Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi urged graduates to ensure that technological breakthroughs remain anchored in ethics and social responsibility while the institute showcased the rapid expansion of its first overseas campus in East Africa.

Addressing the 63rd Convocation as the chief guest, President Mwinyi said the graduating class was stepping into a world being reshaped by artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and quantum technologies, where the true test of innovation would lie in its ability to advance society.

“Every great innovation presents humanity with a choice. It can deepen inequality or expand opportunity. It can divide communities or unite them. That choice belongs not to technology itself, but to those who create it. Students can shape a world driven by purpose rather than technology alone,” he added.

The convocation saw 3,518 degrees, including 511 PhDs, conferred on 3,106 students. The institute also unveiled the layout of the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, India’s first international IIT, marking another milestone in its global outreach.

Describing IIT Madras as a global benchmark in engineering education, Mwinyi said the institute’s strength extended beyond research excellence to its ability to translate ideas into enterprises, employment and practical solutions. He said the Zanzibar campus symbolised a partnership founded on the belief that knowledge should transcend borders, bringing together students from India, Tanzania and several African nations under a shared pursuit of excellence.

Board of Governors Chairman Pawan Goenka said that the presence of the President Mwinyi at the convocation reflected the deepening partnership between India and Tanzania in higher education. Highlighting IIT Madras’s ecosystem, he added, “The institute has nurtured more than 560 startups with a combined valuation exceeding Rs 74,000 crore and produced globally recognised deep-tech ventures such as Agnikul Cosmos, GalaxEye and Ather Energy. This campus does not merely produce graduates and publish papers. It builds industries, creates jobs and turns research into enterprise.”

Presenting the director’s report, V Kamakoti, said, “IIT-M Zanzibar has emerged as an important higher education hub in East Africa, with 130 students, 51% of them from Tanzania, while the rest represent India, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zambia. The inaugural M Tech batch has recorded 100% placements and the campus aims to expand enrolment to 350-500 students by 2027 through enhanced faculty strength, stronger industry partnerships and the development of East Africa’s first research-integrated Startup Studio.”

He also highlighted the launch of the IITM Global Foundation and new innovation hubs in Dubai and California as part of the institute’s vision of evolving into the world’s first multinational university.

Tech panel formed to slash cost of ECR elevated corridor project

<atom:author><atom:name>Online Desk</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371166</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>elevated corridor,ECR,Tech panel</media:keywords>

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (TNSHA) has decided to constitute a technical committee to reduce the cost of the proposed 13.3-km, four-lane elevated corridor between Thiruvanmiyur and Uthandi along the East Coast Road (ECR).

The committee has been tasked with identifying measures to bring down the project cost by around Rs 600 crore, reducing the estimated outlay from Rs 2,100 crore to about Rs 1,500 crore.

TN Govt likely to cancel tender for Thiruvanmiyur–Uthandi elevated road project
