He contended that the police could not adopt a “pick and choose” approach and must remain neutral.

Opposing the plea, Advocate General Vijay Narayan submitted that the petition was a proxy litigation and that a CBI probe was unwarranted since the local police was conducting the investigation properly. He further contended that any allegation of discrimination should be raised by the persons directly affected.

The Bench questioned the need for a CBI probe, observing that a complaint had been registered, an investigation was underway, and arrests had already been made. It asked what extraordinary circumstances warranted transferring the case to the CBI. The Court reserved its orders.

A Tiruppur-based advocate, J Balasubramani, has moved the Madras High Court seeking transfer of the investigation into the case registered by the Triplicane Police over the alleged attempt to poach a TVK MLA from Uthangarai to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The petitioner contended that the FIR ought to have been registered by the Uthangarai Police, as the alleged offence was said to have occurred there, and alleged that registering the case at the Triplicane Police Station in Chennai was driven by political convenience rather than territorial jurisdiction.

The petition further stated that, under the DVAC Manual, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) is responsible for investigating offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and for inquiring into complaints relating to bribery, corruption, and allied misconduct by public servants.

The petitioner further submitted that MDMK General Secretary Vaiko had publicly stated that Chief Minister Vijay had asked him to persuade two MDMK MLAs to resign and switch sides with an assurance of support for their re-election.

He also referred to DMK MLA PS Srinivasan’s allegation that he was offered more than Rs 50 crore and a ministerial berth on behalf of a serving Minister to join TVK. The petition further stated that six AIADMK MLAs later joined TVK and that DMK MLA Anitha R Radhakrishnan had alleged he was pressured to quit the DMK and join TVK, failing which criminal cases would be foisted against him.

The petitioner sought transfer of the investigation from the Triplicane Police to the CBI for a fresh, comprehensive and independent probe. He contended that the case involves allegations affecting the integrity of the democratic process and therefore requires an independent investigation. The plea also sought an interim stay on the ongoing investigation into the alleged attempt to bribe the TVK MLA.

NEET UG 2026 results out: 12 Tamil Nadu students score above 690

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>NEET,Exams,medical entrance</media:keywords>

NEET exam aspirants and parents wait in a queue.

NEET exam aspirants and parents wait in a queue.

CHENNAI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Thursday declared the results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2026, paving the way for counselling and admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other undergraduate medical courses across the country.

12 Tamil Nadu students score above 690

Among those scored above 690, at least 12 are from Tamil Nadu with Venktapathi Velayutham V A scoring the 12th rank with 99.99915%. According to him, the Centre accepted the proposal and included it in the President's Address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

Palaniswami said a detailed project report for the first phase was subsequently prepared and received technical approval from the Environmental Protection Training and Research Institute.

Claiming that the project continued to receive support from the Centre after the change of government in Tamil Nadu in 2021, he said the Union government approved about Rs 935 crore for the first phase in 2024 under a funding pattern of 60 per cent from the Centre and 40 per cent from the State.

The AIADMK leader alleged that the previous DMK government neither allocated the State's share of funds nor claimed the Centre's contribution, resulting in delays in implementing the project. He claimed that nearly 30 per cent of the first-phase works would have been completed by now had the project commenced immediately after the Centre's approval.

Palaniswami said there was no need to announce a fresh scheme and urged the Vijay government to implement the existing 'Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery' project with central assistance. Of the total 6.60-km stretch, 3.68 km comprises an elevated corridor supported by 83 piers, some of which are nearly 50 metres high," said K Srinivasulu, Project Director, NHAI's Salem Project Implementation Unit (PIU).

He said around 3.10 km of the alignment passes through forest areas in Dharmapuri district. Of the remaining 3.50 km, about 1.60 km falls within Salem district and 1.90 km in Dharmapuri district. One of the project's key objectives is to address the dangerous downhill gradient and sharp curves that have long made the Thoppur Ghat a major accident black spot.

"Vehicles often gather excessive speed while descending the steep slopes and negotiating multiple curves, leading to accidents. The existing downward gradient of about 5 per cent to 7 per cent is being reduced to around 3 per cent and the radius of the curves is being improved to enhance safety," Srinivasulu said.

The project also involves widening the existing four-lane highway into a six-lane carriageway. NHAI expects the redesigned alignment to improve traffic movement for the nearly 60,000 vehicles that use the corridor every day.

More than 630 accidents have been reported on the Thoppur Ghat stretch between 2018 and 2026, while nearly 80 people lost their lives on the section between 2018 and 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for the project on March 11, 2024 and it is scheduled for completion by March 2028.

Transport operators say the project will have a far-reaching impact on freight movement. "More than 5,000 trucks use this stretch every day in both directions as it is a vital corridor connecting Karnataka with several parts of Tamil Nadu. Even a minor accident can bring traffic to a standstill for several hours, sometimes up to five hours, disrupting the supply of goods," said C Dhanaraj, president of the State Lorry Owners Federation, Tamil Nadu.

He said delays are particularly costly for consignments of perishable commodities, including vegetables transported from Bengaluru to various parts of Tamil Nadu.

Describing the Thoppur Ghat as one of the most feared stretches for truck drivers, Dhanaraj said the steep gradients and blind curves often force drivers to apply brakes repeatedly, increasing the risk of brake failure while descending.

"Once these engineering deficiencies are corrected, drivers will have a much safer and smoother journey. This has been a long-pending demand of the transport sector for several decades, and we are pleased that the work is progressing steadily," he said.

AT A GLANCE

Rs 905 crore: Total project cost

NH-44: Dharmapuri to Salem highway

6.60km: Total project length

46%: Work completed

March 2028: Work completion target

60,000 plus: Approximate volume of vehicles using the stretch daily

5,000 plus: Number of trucks using the corridor every day

3.68km: Elevated corridor with 83 piers

4 to 6 lanes: Road upgrade

3%: Gradient reduced from 5 to 7 per cent on the downhill stretch

630 plus: Total accident record between 2018 and 2026

80: Number of deaths reported during the period

Key objective: Eliminate sharp curves and steep gradients to improve safety

Coimbatore: Consumer forum urges CM Vijay to enforce road re-laying rules

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Coimbatore,road re-laying,CM Vijay,Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC)</media:keywords>

Laying of Nanjundapuram Road sans proper milling in Coimbatore has led to an increase in height

Laying of Nanjundapuram Road sans proper milling in Coimbatore has led to an increase in height

COIMBATORE: Alleging widespread non-compliance with High Court directions on maintaining road levels during relaying works, the Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has appealed to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to intervene and ensure strict enforcement of existing norms across all local bodies.

In a representation to the Chief Minister, K Kathirmathiyon, secretary of CCC, claimed that roads in several parts of the state continue to be re-laid without proper milling or scraping of the existing surface, resulting in a gradual increase in the Finished Road Level (FRL).

After the issue was raised earlier through a public interest litigation, the government informed the Madras High Court that all local bodies had been instructed not to increase road levels while relaying roads. Subsequently, the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Municipal Administration issued directions requiring civic bodies to maintain the existing road level after relaying.

However, these instructions are not implemented by local bodies, creating difficulties for residents, as houses that were originally above road level gradually ended up below the road surface after successive relaying works. It also increased the risk of rainwater entering residential properties, obstructing access to buildings and causing long term damage to infrastructure.

Seeking corrective action, Kathirmathiyon urged the Chief Minister to direct all local bodies to remove excess road layers wherever relaying had been carried out in violation of the prescribed norms and restore the FRL to its original level. The forum also sought recovery of the rectification cost from officials responsible for permitting such violations, as penalising contractors alone would not address the hardship faced by residents.

Further, the consumer forum stated that a legal notice issued in September 2025 to the then Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, the Director of Municipal Administration and the Commissioner of Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation proposing contempt proceedings for alleged non-compliance has evoked no response.

Armstrong murder probe: TN govt withdraws appeal, clears way for CBI investigation

<atom:author><atom:name>Online Desk</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371166</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Madras High Court,Tamil Nadu government,CBI investigation,Armstrong murder</media:keywords>

BSP state president K Armstrong

BSP state president K Armstrong

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday withdrew its appeal in the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order transferring the murder case of BSP Tamil Nadu president K Armstrong to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), allowing the central agency's probe to continue, Maalaimalar reported.

The development comes a little over two years after Armstrong was hacked to death in Chennai, a case that sparked widespread attention amid allegations of the involvement of influential persons and political figures.

High Court order paves way for CBI probe

Armstrong, the Tamil Nadu BSP president, was hacked to death by a group of assailants near his residence in Perambur, Chennai, on July 5, 2024. Following the killing, the Sembium police registered a case and arrested 27 persons in connection with the murder.

During the course of the investigation, petitions were filed before the Madras High Court seeking a CBI inquiry into the case, citing allegations that the investigation required an independent agency. The High Court subsequently ordered that the investigation be transferred to the CBI.

Supreme Court appeal delayed transfer

The transfer, however, did not take place immediately after an appeal challenging the High Court's order was filed before the Supreme Court during the previous DMK government. The appeal resulted in a stay, delaying the proposed CBI investigation.

According to the report, following the change in government, the present administration withdrew the appeal filed before the Supreme Court, removing the legal hurdle for the central agency to proceed with the investigation. With the appeal withdrawn, the CBI is now expected to formally assume charge of the case.

Fresh investigation to begin

CBI officials are expected to collect all case records and investigation documents from the Sembium police before commencing a fresh probe into the murder.

The agency is also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing and verify the various allegations that had surfaced during the earlier stages of the investigation.

One of the accused in the case, north Chennai history-sheeter Nagendran, died in prison due to ill health after his arrest. Proceedings against the remaining accused are continuing before the trial court.

The CBI's entry into the case has generated renewed attention because of allegations regarding the possible involvement of certain political figures. Officials are expected to carry out a detailed investigation into every aspect of the case, and further developments are anticipated as the probe gathers pace.

No reels, corruption or irregularities: CM Vijay issues stern warning at Cabinet meeting

<atom:author><atom:name>Online Desk</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371166</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Reels,corruption,Cabinet Meeting,CM Vijay,Minister Keerthana</media:keywords>

CM Vijay

CM Vijay

CHENNAI: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday (July 16) directed ministers and senior officials to ensure there was no corruption, administrative irregularities, unruly behaviour in government schools or the making of social media reels during official duties, while chairing the Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting, according to a Thanthi TV report.

The Chief Minister's remarks come amid recent criticism a reel showing Industries Minister S Keerthana, whose interaction with a government school student during an inspection in Virudhunagar drew objections from child rights activists.

School inspection row

In the viral video, Minister Keerthana asks a student, “What’s your father?”, and the child remains silent. While many callers sought to report alleged instances of bribery that they faced, officials also received a large number of general enquiries and even unrelated calls.

To manage the torrent of response from the public, the DVAC was forced to modify its system and began asking complainants to submit details through WhatsApp text messages or voice notes instead of lengthy phone conversations.
CHENNAI/BENGALURU: Ringing alarm bells in India, especially in the national security and nuclear establishments, 19,000 files related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in south Tamil Nadu, the largest such facility in the country, was posted on the dark web by a notorious ransomware group.

Reacting to the development, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) said no drawings, data or information related to nuclear safety or nuclear security systems had been compromised.

The leaked documents allegedly include blueprints and suppliers, said leading news agency Reuters which first reported the matter, adding that the ransomware group, World Leaks, claimed that the information was part of the more than 8.50 lakh documents that it obtained through hacking the Reliance Anil Ambani group.

The company, which is one of the contractors of the plant, told the news agency that there was a partial data breach from a third-party service provider that it has engaged, and added that the Indian government has been kept in the loop.

According to media reports, the documents that World Leaks leaked and published include information about the ventilation and cooling systems used in Units 3 and 4 of the nuclear power plant, which are being built by the Anil Ambani Group firm, Reliance Infrastructure.

While details like the extent, threat, and the players involved in the leak is not yet clear, the information about nuclear power plants being leaked itself is a serious enough threat for the Computer Emergency Response Team India (CERT-In), the country’s premier cybersecurity agency, to step in to investigate.

Meanwhile, the NPCIL clarified that the alleged leak of drawings and data related to Units 3 and 4 do not involve any nuclear safety or nuclear security systems.

In a statement, NPCIL said the engineering, procurement and construction works done by Reliance Infrastructure covers only the commissioning of common service facilities, which are conventional in nature and similar to those used in thermal power plants and other process industries.

These facilities are not connected to nuclear safety or nuclear security systems, it said.

TVK expels Chengalpattu functionary over The city's port, airport, railway station and road connectivity have supported the growth of the industry.

According to a Daily Thanthi report, with hot and dry weather prevailing for most months of the year, the region provides ideal conditions for drying fish, allowing production to continue on a large scale.

Production process

After the annual fishing ban ends, mechanised boats return to sea, bringing in large quantities of fish. Popular varieties such as anchovy (nethili), sardine (saalai), seer fish (seela) and trevally (paarai) are selected for dried fish production.

The fish are cleaned, salted and left to soak for several hours or up to a day. They are then spread out on clean drying yards and left under the sun for several days until the moisture is completely removed. The finished products are quality checked before being packed for sale and export.

Fishermen said the industry provides employment to thousands of people involved in processing, drying, packing and marketing.

Exports to several countries

Workers are currently busy sorting, cleaning, salting and sun-drying fish to meet export demand.

Dried fish from Tuticorin is exported mainly to Sri Lanka. It is also shipped in large quantities to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain, where it is popular among consumers.

Fish shortage drives concerns for exporters

Joseph Cascarino, a dried fish exporter from Thoothukudi, said dried anchovy and maasi karuvadu account for a major share of exports.

He said overseas demand remains high, but producers are unable to increase output because of limited availability of fish.

According to him, after the fishing ban ended, fresh fish demand within Tamil Nadu increased sharply, while traders from Kerala continue to buy large quantities of bigger fish for export. This has reduced the supply of fish needed for dried fish production.

Prices climb sharply

The shortage has pushed up production costs and market prices. A kilogram of dried anchovy, which earlier sold for Rs 150 to Rs 230, is now priced at around Rs 410.

Similarly, maasi karuvadu is currently sold at Rs 450 to Rs 550 per kilogram.

Exporters said around four to five containers of dried fish are shipped from Tuticorin every month.

Tamil Nadu government urges schools to avoid open spaces to beat summer heat

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Tamil Nadu government,summer heat,schools</media:keywords>

Representative Image

CHENNAI: In view of the prevailing extreme heat conditions across Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of School Education has issued a detailed circular to all Chief Educational Officers, directing them to implement precautionary measures to safeguard the health and well-being of students.

The instructions, issued following the recommendations of the State Disaster Management Authority and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), are to be followed by all government and aided schools.

The circular advised schools to avoid conducting outdoor activities, including morning assemblies, physical education classes, sports events, and other programmes, during periods of intense heat; instead, shift such activities indoors or reschedule them to cooler hours of the day whenever possible.

Principals and teachers have been asked to educate students on the symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Palaniswami's position within the party appeared to receive a boost on Wednesday after two MLAs, who were earlier identified with former minister SP Velumani-CVe Shanmugam's camp attended district-level review meetings convened by him.

The development is being seen as a significant shift within the party, as MLAs aligned with the Velumani and CVe Shanmugam faction had largely stayed away from the consultation meetings being held by Palaniswami after the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Palaniswami held review meetings with district office-bearers from Erode Suburban East, Erode Suburban West, Tiruvallur East and Tiruvallur West to assess the party's performance in the Assembly elections and discuss measures to strengthen the organisation.

The meeting in Erode was attended by MLA Hari Baskar, while Tiruttani MLA K Hari participated in the Tiruvallur review meeting. Both legislators were earlier considered close to the Velumani camp, making their presence noteworthy.

Party insiders said the participation of the two MLAs was being viewed as a positive signal for Palaniswami, suggesting that leaders previously aligned with the Velumani and CVe Shanmugam group have begun extending support to his leadership.

The latest development follows the participation of Pappireddipatti MLA Maragatham Vetrivel, who was also considered close to Velumani and CVe Shanmugam faction, in a similar district consultation meeting chaired by Palaniswami last week. Her attendance had also been interpreted as a sign of growing support for the AIADMK chief.

During Wednesday's meetings, Palaniswami directed district office-bearers to intensify preparations for the upcoming local body elections and work towards securing the party's victory. He urged functionaries to recommend only loyal and committed party workers for organisational responsibilities.

He also asked cadres not to be distracted by leaders who had left the party for personal interests and stressed the need to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level.

According to party sources, Palaniswami told functionaries that AIADMK must win the upcoming by-election whenever it is announced to reaffirm Erode as one of the party's strongholds.

2 classmates stab disabled student inside government school near Sivaganga

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Sivaganga,Government school,Stabbed,disabled student</media:keywords>

The injured student at the Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital on July 15.

The injured student at the Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital on July 15.

CHENNAI: A Class 12 student was allegedly stabbed by two fellow students inside a government higher secondary school near Sivaganga on Wednesday, triggering panic on the campus.

The Government Higher Secondary School in Mallal village is run by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, and the injured student, Sanjay Prasad (17), is differently abled and the son of Rajangam (45), a mason from Niranjan village near Kalaiyarkoil.

According to the police, Sanjay had just entered his classroom when two students allegedly attacked him with a knife.
