Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha elections 2024 RESULTS LIVE: 40 is ours, says CM Stalin as DMK poised to win second straight term in state

Going by latest figures, the Dravidian party headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin is all set to make a near-clean sweep, reminiscent of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Online Desk

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin addressed the press on Tuesday at 7 pm, expressing his gratitude to the voters, He stated, "I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the voters who voted in the election. I thank the leaders and volunteers of India Alliance who worked to defeat the fascism and save India."

"Last time we won in 39 constituencies, this time we have won in 40 constituencies. The DMK coalition has achieved a historic victory by winning 40 out of 40 seats," he added.

The DMK-led INDIA bloc seems all set to make a near-clean sweep in the Lok Sabha elections with trends showing the Dravidian party wresting all 39 seats in the state and the sole seat in the union territory of Puducherry. In 2019, too, the DMK had won from 38 of the 39 states in the state.

DMK's Kanimozhi (Thoothukudi), A Raja (Nilgiris), and Robert Bruce (Tirunelveli) have won from their respective seats, among other candidates.

INC's Tharahai Cuthbert won the Vilavancode assemby bypoll.

The BJP and AIADMK failed to open an account in the state.

TAMIL NADU LOK SABHA ELECTIONS 2024: QUICK FACTS AT A GLANCE

Drawing from five exit polls, a thumping victory for the DMK alliance has been predicted with 36 seats, while the BJP is anticipated to open its account in the state with two seats and one for the AIADMK. The Tamil nationalist Naam Tamilar Katchi's entry makes it a four-way contest with the anti-DMK-Congress votes split into three.

This is the first general election for both the BJP and the AIADMK since their alliance break up. Who among the two will get the second spot? One must wait and watch.

The Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu were held in the first phase of the seven-phased elections on April 19. All 39 seats in the state went to polls simultaneously.

Vote counting for 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, the lone seat in Puducherry, and the Vilavancode bypoll seat (Kanyakumari district) will begin at 8 am on Tuesday.

The DMK-led front is confident of another victory (a sixth in its line of triumphs since 2019) despite the aggressive campaign put up by the BJP to gain a foothold in the Dravidian citadel. It is keen to repeat its 2019 performance when it won 38 of the 39 seats in the state. The lone setback came in the southern Theni district when the AIADMK-led alliance, which also comprised the BJP then, managed to win a solitary seat.

Barring the 2014 victory of BJP veteran Pon Radhakrishnan from the Kanyakumari segment, the saffron party won in Tamil Nadu, since 1998, only when it aligned with either the AIADMK or DMK.

BJP’s K Annamalai (Coimbatore), DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran (Central Chennai), A Raja (Nilgiris), Kanimozhi (Thoothukudi), BJP’s L Murugan (Nilgiris), Tamilisai Soundararajan (South Chennai), former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (Ramanathapuram), Congress party’s Karti Chidambaram (Sivaganga) and AIADMK’s J Jayavardhan (South Chennai) and AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran (Theni) are among the prominent candidates.

  • 39 Lok Sabha seats + Puducherry
  • 950 candidates — 876 men, 74 women candidates, 609 Independents
  • 69.72 per cent of 6.23 crore voted. They include 3.17 crore women and 3.06 crore men
  • 43 counting centres

What were some of the main issues brought up in the pre-election campaigns of the parties?

The key focus of the DMK’s campaign was on its “battle” to get funds from Centre including for flood relief. Stalin and his party leaders said not a rupee was given by the Centre and Nirmala Sitharaman’s claim of Rs 5,000 crore central assistance to tackle the situation arising out of floods was actually the state’s own borrowing from banks merely channelled through the Union government.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of CM Stalin and a Minister crisscrossed the state, held roadshows and targeted the BJP on a slew of issues including the “Madurai AIIMS being a non-starter.” When Udhayanidhi repeatedly attacked PM as “29 paisa Modi” as the Centre returned only “29 paisa out of every one rupee paid as tax” to the Union government by the state, Annamalai countered saying no other state received as much funds as Tamil Nadu from the Centre and if he did not stop the 29 paisa jibe, his party will refer to him as ‘Ganja Udhayanidhi” as the contraband is “available widely” in the state.

The main opposition party’s campaign was steered by Palaniswami, former CM and leader of opposition who took on the ruling DMK over every single issue that mattered, including alleged collapse of law and order and drug menace.

When Annamalai claimed AIADMK would disappear following polls, without losing cool, Palaniswami in a repartee said voters will teach them a lesson and no force could touch the party that has stormed several struggles

On the other hand, Prime Minister Modi made 9 trips to the state this year, undoubtedly a first in the state's history. He denounced the DMK-Congress over alleged corruption and ‘parivarvad’ politics.

The PM also brought up the Katchatheevu issue prominently. He sought to pin down the DMK-Congress saying fishermen now pay the price for their betrayal while the ruling party retorted by posing questions on "Chinese incursions."

Modi also dwelt on the drug menace, following the arrest of expelled office-bearer of the DMK, Jaffer Sadiq by the NCB and the threat to “eradicate Sanatana Dharma."

COUNTING BEGINS

Counting of votes across Tamil Nadu begins

There are nearly 1,000 candidates in fray for the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. However, even amid predictions about a wave in favour of the DMK-led INDIA bloc, all eyes are on the outcome of one constituency – Coimbatore.

Thanks to BJP State unit chief K Annamalai’s brand of hyper aggressive politics that does not seem to believe in taking any prisoners, the contest in Coimbatore that would decide his electoral fortunes – some believe political future as well – is one that is closely followed by politicians, pollsters and public alike.
