CHENNAI: Months after its spectacular debut in the Assembly polls, the ruling TVK received the Election Commission of India’s recognition as a State Party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and was also allotted ‘Whistle’ as its common election symbol.

The recognition came on the back of TVK's performance in its maiden electoral contest, in which it won 108 seats and secured 34.92 per cent of the votes to emerge as the single-largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Thanking the voters and party workers for their support, TVK president and Chief Minister C Joseph noted in a statement that the party had entered politics only 27 months ago.

The recognition and allotment of the common symbol was the result of a silent democratic revolution created by the people, Vijay said, and promised that the party would continue to work for the people who placed their faith in it.

"Our service to all the people who trust us, based on the principles of secularism and social justice, will continue forever," Vijay said, while also expressing gratitude to party functionaries and workers for their efforts.

The ECI had allotted the whistle to TVK as its common symbol ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.

Vijay had launched the party in 2024 and contested its first election this year. Its recognition marks a significant organisational milestone for the ruling party, which formed the government after winning 108 seats and securing the support of its post-poll allies.
