The Congress, which was allied with DMK to contest in the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, was the first party to offer support with five MLAs to TVK to enable the formation of the government.

"We want to prevent another election if TVK failed to secure majority in the House. This was wider feeling among alliance partners. Even people do not want another elections," he told a private news channel on Saturday.

Claiming that the Congress also informed the alliance partners including CPI, VCK and IUML about its decision to support the TVK government, Chidambaram said, "the only difference is that we have announced the support to TVK one day before allies did".

Soon after the alliance's poll debacle, the DMK youth wing led by Udhayanidhi Stalin organised a meeting and passed a resolution, accusing the Congress of "betraying" the DMK.

Senior DMK leader TR Baalu also alleged that the Congress betrayed the people who voted for the alliance.

In the 2026 assembly polls, TVK, led by Vijay, emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats, but fell short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority. To form the government, the party required the support of at least 10 more MLAs.

The Congress, which secured five seats, was the first among the opposition parties to extend support to TVK. It was subsequently joined by the VCK, IUML, CPI and CPI(M), which won two seats each. The backing of these parties enabled TVK to cross the majority mark and stake claim to form the government.
