High humidity, isolated rains in store for Chennai, says weather blogger

On Sunday, suburban areas including Tambaram, Pallavaram and some other parts of Chennai received moderate rainfall

CHENNAI: The wind flow and prevalence of upper air cyclonic circulation that are expected in the coming days are likely to bring in intense humidity, while some areas may receive light showers, said a city-based weather blogger.

On Sunday, Tambaram, Pallavaram, and a few other parts of Chennai received widespread rainfall for more than an hour. However, the core city areas remained unquenched and suffered with high humidity, even though the temperature was within the range of normal levels.

The prevalence of upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and strong winds moving from the Eastern side resulted in the city experiencing intense humidity, said weather blogger K Srikanth. The condition would remain the same for the next two to three days, he said.

It would change after the city gets wind from the western side, which is based on the movement of the upper air cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, he added. While some parts of the city may receive light rainfall, the rest would not receive any rain, he said.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, an upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast, while another upper air cyclonic circulation, which prevails over Gulf of Mannar and adjoining south Tamil Nadu, is now moving east-west. Due to this weather pattern, Western Ghats areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris would receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, and even extreme rainfall in some areas, it said.

Some southern districts, including Tirunelveli, Theni, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, and northern districts like Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai would also receive heavy rainfall at isolated places until August 7, said the RMC.
