Chennai
I have very simple needs. Often, I do not know what I want. So I don’t get angry or get sad most of the times. All I expect from people is that they keep their word. As a caddy working in Tamil Nadu Golf Federation (TNGF), Cosmo, I am a regular caddy for a few players known to me.
I am a simple man. I grew up around the golf course. Initially, I did not have a clue about my job. I even had trouble fixing golf bags to the trolley. Sometimes, when a golfer asked for a 6 iron, I would hand over the wrong club, but the players would not scold me. Many caddies are specialists in advising the players on what line to take while putting, but I do not. I do my job on the green- which is to mark the ball of the player I am caddying for and carry the flag. Like I said, I am a simple person. Some caddies shout at me for my ‘slow understanding’ but many others patiently tell me what to do.
Also, if someone does not pay me the exact amount—it happened a lot during demonetisation—I get upset. But the golfers know that I think. I hand over the money earned to my family members.
During the monsoon season, when the course is closed, caddies like me have to manage without any income. I cannot do any other job, so it is a tough life. Luckily I do not want too many things. Most caddies want the latest mobile phones. I turn up at the course if the sun shines enough to bring the golfers out.
