Bills drafted to amend SL marriage law

With the enactment of these two Bills the provisions of the Marriage (General) Act will apply to all marriages in Sri Lanka.

A Sri Lankan MP has drafted two Private Members Bills to repeal the existing Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act and to incorporate all marriages under the Marriage (General) Act.

The two bills, drafted by MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana, are due to be tabled in Parliament soon, News First reported on Saturday.

With the enactment of these two Bills the provisions of the Marriage (General) Act will apply to all marriages in Sri Lanka.

The Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act allows marriage of Muslim girls under 18 years of age, which is the common legal marriage age in Sri Lanka.
