Youth beaten to death in civic poll tussle at Kottaipatti

In a first incident of civic poll related murder, a 27-year-old man V Satheesh Kumar was allegedly beaten to death in Kottaipatti Village of Vembakottai taluk in Virudhunagar district late on Wednesday.

Police suspect it as a fall out of issues cropping over illegal auctioning of village president post. Seven persons Ramasubbu (48), Subburaj (32), Ganesan (38), Selvaraj (52), Muthuraj (37), Ananda Ramkumar (24) and Subburam (21) have been arrested.


The village panchayat was delimited for the upcoming polls and caste Hindus, including the victim, convened a meeting and chose four men to contest for the president post. Meanwhile, Satheesh, the victim, manager of private bank (loan section) objected saying that his brother Subburaj should have been called for the meeting since he would be the right person to contest. Subsequently, many from the community shouted down at Satheesh. Trouble erupted when heated words were exchanged between the community people and Satheesh. The situation got aggravated after Satheesh was pushed down and further blows were struck on him. It occurred at around 11 30 pm. The victim felt suffocated and suffered chest pain. He was then taken to Sivakasi Government Hospital, where he was declared dead at 1 pm on Thursday. Based on a complaint lodged by Subbulakshmi, mother of Satheesh, police have filed a case under Section 302 of IPC.
