The state government’s response came after the apex court directed the SEC to submit details regarding the local body elections in Tamil Nadu before December 13. The local body elections to the state were first scheduled in 2016, during the period of the late CM J Jayalalithaa. Citing litigations before the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court the elections were delayed for the past three years. Due to lack of elected local body councils the Centre has been ignoring the funds to local bodies since 2016.

The civic polls will elect over 4,400 councilors in urban local bodies, including corporations and municipalities through electronic voting machines. More than 8,000 town panchayat ward members are also to be elected during the civic polls.

In case of rural civic bodies, more than 1,10,000 posts are lying vacant with a vacancy of 12,524 village panchayat presidents and 99,000 ward members. The State Election Commission has planned to use the electronic voting machines in urban areas and ballot papers in rural pockets.

Meanwhile, the DMK also submitted that the delimitation and revenue demarcations were not done properly in nine districts and demanded corrective measures from the State Election Commission. The political parties in the state has invited applications from the aspiring candidates.
