VOC Peravai protest turns violent, 73 held

The protest by VOC Peravai against the state government turned violent after one of the protesters hurled a bottle on a woman police personnel. Following that police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd in Tiruchy on Wednesday.

The VOC Peravai announced a protest against the state after the announcement of seven castes under one umbrella of Devendra Kula Vellalar. The VOC Peravai was dominated by the Backward Vellalar community. As per the announcement, the members from the Peravai assembled at the Central Bus stand premises and staged a protest.

While the protest was on, the members had reportedly blocked buses and attacked them with sticks and stones. When the police attempted to stop them, one of the protesters had reportedly hurled a bottle onto a woman police personnel who sustained injury after the bottle broke on her head. Sensing the situation was out of control, the police resorted to a lathi charge and chased the crowd. The police also arrested as many as 73 persons. Subsequently, the commotion was brought under control.
