Veterinary college and research institute to be set up in Theni

A Government Order (GO) has been issued to setup a veterinary college and research institute at Veerapandi in Theni district.

“The admission in the proposed college will commence in 2021-22, initially, with an intake of 40 students and will be expanded to 80,” said K Gopal, Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department, in the GO. Tamil Nadu has four veterinary colleges functioning in Chennai, Namakkal, Orathanadu and Tirunelveli. The fifth college will be setup at Thalaivasal in Salem district and state had already provided administrative sanctions for establishing the college, which will be largest in Asia. The proposal to setup a goverment veterinary college was announced by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, on March 20, this year. Based on the announcement, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) submitted a proposal to the government in which it stated that 228 acres of land is available in Veerapandi village to setup the college.
