Vellore exported more than 37% of TN’s leather

Walajahpet, Ambur and Vaniyambadi in Vellore district contributed more than 37% to the state’s leather exports, collector SA Raman said while releasing the district’s 2017 HR development report on Thursday.

He said that good industrial infrastructure ensured that various industries flourished in different places in the district. Stating that the district population, according to the 2011 census, was 39.36 lakh, Raman said per capita annual income had increased to Rs.63, 996 while literacy and education touched 73%.

The state government’s noon meals scheme and the welfare assistance for pregnant women drew good response he claimed the survey stated.

Elucidating on the input provided by all departments in the district, Raman said the report was based on parameters on district residents’ health, education, income and employment avenues.

He also called on officials to provide suggestions for people-based schemes for backward panchayat unions like Kandili, Natrampalli and Alangayam to enable the three areas to catch up with the rest of the district.

Work on the report begun three years ago was collated by the VIT university, Raman said that the report would be an eye opener for people from various walks of life.
