Two men charred to death in cracker unit explosion

Two men were killed in a blast at a cracker unit in Elayirampannai village near Sattur in Virudhunagar district on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Ganeshan (50) of Nadusurakudi of Sattur taluk and Sekar (50) of Valampatti. In the blast, a woman, Mariammal, also sustained injuries and was rushed to government hospital for treatment. 

Police said that the unit was owned by Sujatha of Virudhunagar. On Saturday morning, Ganeshan and Sekar were involved in manufacturing crackers in a working shed and when they were filling chemicals inside chakra, an unanticipated friction triggered sparks. The fire soon spread to and the crackers in the shed ending in a blast.

In the accident, the duo died on the spot. The shed too demolished and their bodies got stuck inside the debris. On information the Fire and Rescue Services personnel and Elayirampannai police rushed to the spot, removed the debris and recovered the bodies. 

The Elayirampannai police have registered a case and are investigating. The family members of Ganeshan and Sekar refused to accept the bodies demanding compensation. Later, the cracker unit owner agreed to give Rs 5 lakh to each of the deceased and also gave Rs 50,000 for cremation. 

Virudhunagar SP Rajarajan inspected the spot and held talks with the family members and the cracker unit owner.
