Travel in comfort: Women in khaki get 156 scooters

In a first, the Tamil Nadu police purchased women-friendly gearless scooters for the exclusive use of officers in khaki and distributed them on Friday. Of the total 1,506 two-wheelers purchased in bulk, 156 were scooters, a senior police officer said.

The scooters for the women police personnel were flagged off by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday along with 2,240 vehicles, including 510 jeeps, 20 buses, 100 mini buses, 50 vans and 4 water tankers, purchased at a total cost of Rs 91.78 lakh for the police department. According to Seema Agrawal, Additional Director General of Police, headquarters, the Department decided to purchase scooters with women police personnel in mind, so they could travel comfortably. This is the first time TN police bought scooters in bulk. “Nearly 10 per cent of the total sanction of two-wheelers are scooters,” she added.
