Traditional bullfight kicks off Pongal festival

Reports say 700 bulls and as many bull-tamers are taking part in the first of a bunch of events in Madurai district in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu's colourful Pongal festival is underway - kicked off by the traditional bullfight. 

The harvest festival is one of the biggest in the state with bull-tamers taking part at the main venues in Madurai district. 

Reports say 700 bulls and as many bull-tamers are taking part in the first of a bunch of events in Avaniapuram. 

The bulls and the tamers are medically examined before the events, reports say.

The bull-taming events are supervised by a panel headed by a retired judge, according to reports. 

State minister RB Udhayakumar, lawmakers and regional administrative leaders took part in the event, reports say.
