TN releases holiday list of 2024; five on Monday

According to the release, Tamil New Year and Mahavir Jayanti fall on Sunday. Five holidays fall on Monday and three on Friday.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Friday released the list of public holidays for 2024.

According to a Government Order issued by chief secretary Shiv Das Meena, 24 days in 2024 are declared as public holidays except Saturdays and Sundays.

As usual, January have maximum public holidays such as New Year (January 01 - Monday), Pongal (January 15 - Monday), Thiruvalluvar Day (January 16 - Tuesday), Uzhavar Thirunal (January 17 - Wednesday), Thai Poosam (January 25 - Thursday) and Republic Day (January 26 - Friday).

In April, Annual closing of accounts for commercial banks and cooperative banks (April 1 - Monday, applicable only to commercial banks and cooperative banks in Tamil Nadu), Telugu New Year (April 9 - Tuesday), Ramzan (April 11 - Thursday), Tamil New Year (April 14 - Sunday) and Mahaveer Jayanthi (April 21 - Sunday) are declared as public holidays.

Notably, April 14 is declared as Tamil New Year instead of the first day of Tamil month Thai.

Similarly, holidays declared for Good Friday on March 29 - Friday, May Day on May 1 - Wednesday, Bakrid on June 17 - Monday, Muharram on July 17 - Wednesday, Independence Day on August 15 - Thursday, Krishna Jayanthi on August 26 - Monday, Vinayagar Chathurthi on September 7 - Saturday, Milad-un-Nabi on September 16 - Monday, Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2 - Wednesday, Ayutha Pooja on October 11 - Friday, Vijaya Dasami on October 12 - Saturday, Deepavali on October 31 - Thursday and Christmas on December 25 - Wednesday.

Meanwhile, there are no public holidays in the months of February and November.
