TN, Puducherry record normal northeast monsoon; reservoir storage improves

CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has concluded the northeast monsoon season in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with an overall ‘Normal’ status for the period from October 1 to December 31.

The region received 42 cm of rainfall against the seasonal average of 44 cm, reflecting a marginal deficit of 3%, which falls within the near-normal range set by the India Meteorological Department.

While the cumulative regional figures indicate normal performance, district-wise data shows uneven distribution. Twenty-seven areas, including 25 districts, Puducherry and Karaikal, recorded normal rainfall. However, 10 districts in north-central and interior belts faced a deficit, with seasonal shortfall ranging from 20-59%.

In contrast, southern districts experienced higher rainfall. Tirunelveli topped the chart with a ‘large excess’, registering a 95% surplus. Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Ranipet also recorded excess rainfall.

Reservoir levels have shown improvement compared to last year. Data from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board shows total storage at 12,342 MCFT on December 31, against a combined capacity of 13,222 MCFT. Poondi, Puzhal and Chembarambakkam are currently at full capacity, with controlled releases to ensure safety.
