COIMBATORE: Enraged by his married daughter’s affair, a Madurai man murdered her by slitting her throat. She was all of 22 and a mother of a two-year-old girl. The incident took place in Tirupur on Wednesday, police said.

The accused, Arumugam, 50, a native of Madurai, lived with his family at Murugampalayam in Tirupur and was employed in a dyeing unit. His daughter Simya was married to Prem Kumar, 27, a relative from Tirupur. The couple were also employed in a dyeing unit.

According to police, the couple had frequent quarrels, allegedly over Simya spending long hours on her mobile phone. On January 2, Simya went missing from home along with her child. Acting on a missing person’s complaint, the Veerapandi police traced them to Kanniyakumari, where she was found to be staying with a man she had met through Instagram.

Two days ago, a police team brought them back to Tirupur. They counselled her and sent her and the child with her parents. Police said that on Wednesday morning, Simya and her father Arumugam fought over the issue. He accused her of bringing disgrace to the family.

In a fit of fury, Arumugam grabbed a knife and slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times, killing her on the spot.

Shortly after, Arumugam’s wife who had gone out with her granddaughter returned and found Simya lying dead in a pool of blood.

A police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepa Sathyan arrived on the scene and sent Simya’s body for a post-mortem at Tirupur Government Hospital. Arumugam has been arrested and an investigation is under way.
