Karuppaiah (54) was contesting for the president of Penmani panchayat near Periyamullipatti in Avoor, Pudukkottai and his son Ayyappan (25) was in the booth as his agent.

Around 5 pm, Moorthi (25), one of the supporters of Ayyappan came to booth number 153 at Mullipatti and was not allowed to vote as the scheduled voting time was over. However, Moorthi continued to argue with officials to allow to excise his vote. When the officials continued to deny permission, Moorthi took away the ballot box and started running. On seeing the police chasing him, Moorthi abandoned the ballot box from bushes and fled the spot.

The police who saw this, recovered the box while the officials heaved a great sigh of relief. The police, later, brought the box to the booth and handed it over to the officials. Later, the officials sealed the box in front of the candidates.

In the late evening, the police arrested Moorthi and Ayyappan. They were taken to a separate place for an inquiry.
