CHENNAI: After much deliberation, the Minister of Higher Education Govi Chezhiaan has announced general transfer counselling for professors in government colleges and universities across the State. The professors can apply for counselling before January 5.
The general transfer counselling has been is similar to the process followed by the School Education Department for teachers in government and aided schools.
Following the pattern, Minister Chezhiaan recently announced that interested and eligible professors working in government arts, science, engineering and polytechnic colleges under the Department of Higher Education can apply for the counselling. Additionally, librarians, physical education directors, technical staff and staff working in government arts, science, engineering and polytechnic colleges operating under the department have also been directed to apply before the deadline.
Since almost a year ago, the Department of Higher Education has been pondering whether to conduct the general transfer counselling like the school education department, which is usually held in May, June and July every academic year. It’s however noteworthy that so far general transfer counselling at college-level has so far been conducted on an offline mode.
After much discussions with various stakeholders, including department officials and professors from November 2024, the Higher Education Department has confirmed transfer counselling online.
Department added that it was likely that the counselling would be held between May and July next year, before the new 2026-27 academic year kicks starts. Speaking to DT Next, a senior professor at University of Madras, who opposed the announcement, averred, “Why announce the transfer counselling right in the middle of the academic year? Such a transfer should be conducted at the end of the academic year.”
