Tamil Nadu: Penn Thozhilalargal Sangam extends support to protesting nurses

Sujata Mody said that Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and government hospitals are efficient mainly because of the staff working at these facilities. However, they have been neglected and even manhandled when demanding their rights.

CHENNAI: Amid the ongoing protest of nurses urging for regularisation, the Penn Thozhilalargal Sangam has extended their support to protestors and urged the government to fulfil their demands at the earliest.

Speaking to DT Next, Sujata Mody, president of Penn Thozhilalargal Sangam, said, "There is no hesitation to support the women nurses who are protesting for their basic rights. Though the DMK government is catering to homemakers, there is a notion that working women, especially in social sectors, such as sanitary workers and health departments, have been neglected."

She added that Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and government hospitals are efficient mainly because of the staff working at these facilities. However, they have been neglected and even manhandled when demanding their rights.

"Since COVID-19, the nurses have been working tirelessly, taking on additional burden for a meagre salary without basic infrastructure and leisure. Hence, we call on the government to take responsibility for these nurses and women working in social sectors in general," added a member of the Sangam.
