Erode MP Ganesamoorthy attempts suicide; hospitalised

COIMBATORE: Erode Member of Parliament A Ganesamoorthy from MDMK allegedly attempted suicide by consuming ‘pesticide tablet’ and is admitted in a private hospital in Coimbatore on Sunday.

Ganesamoorthy, aged 77, who was elected on a DMK ticket in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, was found by his son G Kabilan in an unconscious state at his house in Periyar Nagar around 9.30 AM.

He allegedly attempted suicide by consuming the pesticide tablet mixed with water, police said.

The family members immediately rushed him to a private hospital in Erode and later to another private hospital in Coimbatore by an ambulance around 2.30 PM.

He has been admitted in the ICU and has been put on the ventilator, police said.

Minister for Urban Development and Housing Excise and Prohibition S Muthusamy and other MDMK leaders visited the hospital and enquired about his health condition.

A three time MP, Ganesamoorthy was also elected as an MLA from Modakurichi assembly constituency.

A police inquiry is underway to ascertain if he took the extreme step due to political reasons or any other.
