CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has increased the consolidated monthly payment for Thoomai Kaavalars (rural cleanliness workers) from Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000.

In an order issued by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, the government said that several representations had been received by the directorate, along with requests from district Collectors, seeking a hike in the consolidated pay of Thoomai Kaavalars.

Considering these demands, the government approved the enhancement of the monthly consolidated payment to Rs. 6,000. To implement the hike, an allocation of Rs 476.13 crore has been made under the State Finance Commission grant. The decision is expected to benefit around 66,000 cleanliness workers across the State.
