Students of Bharathidasan University (BDU) and a private college staged separate protests after two girl students from these institutions attempted suicide. In both the cases, the protesters blamed faculty members for the students choosing the extreme step.
The university student survived the attempt after being rushed to a hospital immediately after she drank phenyl. The other girl, a student of a women’s college who hailed from Jharkhand, hanged herself.
On Monday, students of BDU’s Khajamalai campus went on protest seeking action against the professor, including his immediate transfer. In the second case, it was the hostel warden who is facing the accusation.

The students of Bharathidasan University (BDU), Khajamalai campus, staged a protest on Monday demanding action against the head of Geology department after a girl student attempted suicide in the hostel room allegedly due to his rude behaviour.
The student, a post graduate student, attempted to commit suicide by drinking phenyl on November 15 after writing a two-page suicide note in which she mentioned the alleged rude behaviour of her department head Sakthivel. The professor insulted her in public and threatened to fail her for no reason, she said in the note. She added that she hoped her death would bring solace to her friends, as action would be initiated against the faculty.
She was rushed to a hospital where she has been undergoing treatment.
A day after the suicide attempt, the students had staged a protest demanding action against the professor. They also demanded his transfer so that they would be able to attend classes without fear of reprisal. However, no action has been initiated against him.
On Monday, the students gathered in front of the main block and staged a protest, seeking immediate action against the department head. The university authorities held talks with the agitating students and assured of action.
However, not convinced by this, the students refused to return to class until action was taken. Women’s college students demand action against warden: Meanwhile, Jaffra Parvin (19), a girl from Jharkhand girl who was pursuing bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics at Aiman College of Arts and Science for Women, committed suicide on November 13 by hanging herself unable to bear the alleged torture by the hostel warden. Jaffra, who was pursuing the course under special scholarship scheme, was allegedly scolded by the warden Jesima for using mobile phone.
It was initially said that the girl who completed her Class 12 in Hindi medium could not cope as the medium of instruction was English. However, it was found during a detailed inquiry that the warden had reprimanded her for excessively using mobile phone. On Monday, students gathered in front of the gate and staged a sit-in protest demanding action against the warden. The protest was withdrawn after the college administration held talks with the students and parents. The college declared holiday on Monday. KK Nagar police are investigating
