Sterlite protest anniversary: Vigil up in Thoothukudi

Security has been strengthened in parts of Thoothukudi ahead of the anti-Sterlite protest anniversary. Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Nanduri, on Thursday, seeking cooperation from people said, lockdown restrictions are already in place and nobody has so far come forward seeking permission from district administration to organise any demonstration or rally on the occasion of the anniversary.

Further, he said executive magistrates were also monitoring the situation keenly in Thoothukudi. As many as 2,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around the town. The officials from departments of police and revenue are more vigilant on the occasion to prevent any untoward incident. Moreover, the Collector said a total of 68 Tasmac liquor shops in Thoothukudi town would be closed.

On COVID-19 situation, he said of the 22 positive cases reported on Thursday, 17 persons were returnees from Maharashtra. As of now, the district has a total of 99 active cases under treatment. Besides, 11 containment zones and nine quarantine centers were being monitored by official teams.
