CHENNAI: Educational institutions should give encouragement to education in the mother tongue and schemes must be named using the Tamil language, Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Friday.

The Chief Minister addressing a gathering after inaugurating a new branch of DAV School at Pallikaranai suggested, “institutions like DAV should give priority to provide education in their mother tongue. Similarly I urge you to name famous schemes in Tamil.”

Recalling his association with the school, Stalin said, “DAV Schools has been strict in their admission procedures.

While they provided admission to my daughter, they refused it to my niece though DMK was in power at that time.” The first DAV School in Chennai was opened in Gopalapuram, where he was born and brought up, the CM added.

Chief Minister Stalin said, education is a property and institutions like DAV provide the property which will remain throughout the lifetime of a person. DAV not just provides education on its own but also finances two other government schools, one in Triplicane and another in Saidapet.

Recalling the contributions of Swami Dayanand, whose name the DAV Schools carry, Stalin said the Swami was a religious reformer, who opposed idol worship. “He was the champion of women’s education, opposed child marriage, registered his protest against untouchability and supported women remarriage even 150 years ago,” he added.
