Spectator gored, 132 injured in Sivaganga manjuvirattu events

The event took place in Singampunari town panchayat area and in villages including Kaalappur, Kirungakottai and Soorakudi on Thursday as part of Maattu Pongal celebrations

TIRUPPATTUR/SINGAMPUNARI: One person died after being gored by a bull during the manjuvirattu held at Soorakudi near Singampunari town in the limits of Sivaganga district.

The event took place in Singampunari town panchayat area and in villages including Kaalappur, Kirungakottai and Soorakudi on Thursday as part of Maattu Pongal celebrations. Across the four locations, more than 30 people were injured during the competitions.

At Soorakudi, Alagarsami (56), son of Periyaiya and a native of Kalappur, had come to his daughter’s house to celebrate the festival. While watching the event, he was unexpectedly gored by a bull and suffered severe injuries. He was given first aid at the Soorakudi Primary Health Centre and was being taken to Singampunari for further treatment when he died on the way. SV Mangalam police are investigating.

Meanwhile, a total of 132 persons were injured in bull goring incidents during a manjuvirattu event held at Siravayal near Tirupattur in Sivaganga district.

As the event was inaugurated by District Collector Porkodi, 350 bulls were released one after another. A total of 150 tamers took part and during the event, 132 people got injured in bull goring incidents. They received first aid at the Siravayal medical camp and were later referred to Sivaganga and Karaikudi government hospitals.

Of them, 25 persons—including Sasikumar (32) of Tiruppattur hospital, Amalanathan (52) of Alagamaneri, Muthupazhani (40) of Nagappanpatti, Sasikumar (20) of Sivaganga and Adinarayanan of Melapoongudi—were shifted to Sivaganga Government Hospital for further treatment. Agustin (18) of Kadiyapatti was sent to Tirumayam Government Hospital.
