Spate of suicides sends shock waves across Tiruchy

Three persons have committed suicide here in three separate incidents.

Sundari (35), a railway employee, was living alone at Ponmalaipatti as her husband John Sahayam, who was also a railway employee, died in 2012 in an accident. Though Sundari was allotted employment on compassionate grounds, she was very much frustrated.


On March 2, Sundari was found unconscious by her neighbours and they rushed her to a private hospital. Upon inquiry, it was found that Sundari had consumed rat paste. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Sundari died despite treatment at the private hospital. Ponmalai police have registered a case and are investigating.


Meanwhile, D Santhi (34), a resident of KK Nagar in Tiruchy, had frequent quarrel with her husband Devaraj. On Wednesday, after one such quarrel, Santhi, who was in a frustrated mood, hanged herself by her dupatta. On information, the Airport police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body and sent it to the GH for post-mortem. Fearing arrest, Devaraj escaped and the police are searchingfor him.


In another incident,T Surya Prakasam (29), a resident from Netaji Nagar in Tiruvanaikoil, who was working in a private firm in Chennai, committed suicide by hanging. The parents of Surya Prakasam were searching for a bride. However, on Wednesday, Surya Prakasam, who came to his house, hanged himselfby a saree.


On information, the Srirangam police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to the GH for post-mortem. Further investigations are on
