Snubbed from PM's event, Sasikala may back supporters as independents in polls

Since her expulsion from the AIADMK, Sasikala, the former close confidante of late J Jayalalithaa, has largely been inactive in mainstream politics, after spending time in prison for the disproportionate assets (DA) case conviction and maintaining a low profile even after her release.

CHENNAI: After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) decided not to invite VK Sasikala to the forthcoming PM Modi's Chennai visit, the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's ex-aide is believed to have asked her supporters to contest as independent candidates from select constituencies in the coming Assembly elections, to her strength to the saffron party-led tie-up.

She is reportedly holding discussions on executing the move, miffed over not being invited to the PM's Friday meeting.

Since her expulsion from the AIADMK, Sasikala, the former close confidante of late J Jayalalithaa, has largely been inactive in mainstream politics, after spending time in prison for the disproportionate assets (DA) case conviction and maintaining a low profile even after her release.

However, during both the previous Lok Sabha elections and the upcoming Assembly elections, she has consistently reiterated her demand that all factions of AIADMK should reunite.

She said she has continued her efforts towards this, leading to disappointment at not being invited to the PM Modi event, attended by leaders of many minuscule parties.

Following this development, Sasikala has begun discussing the next course of her political action with her supporters. As part of these efforts, she is planning to organise a public meeting to mark the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran at the end of this month in Kallakurichi district.
