Sivaganga: Two die after falling into molasses tank at sugar mill

CHENNAI: Two contract workers died after falling into a molasses storage tank at a private sugar mill in Padamathur, Sivaganga district, on January 13 night.

The deceased, Mohanasundaram (35) of Karumbavur and Ponnazhaku (59) of Sivaganga, were carrying out maintenance work when they reportedly slipped and fell into the tank, police said. Both died of suffocation, as reported by Maalaimalar.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel retrieved the bodies and sent them to Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Thirupachethi police have registered a case and are probing whether safety protocols and protective equipment were in place. Members of the public have alleged negligence and demanded a thorough inquiry and compensation for the families.
