SHRC raps govt for delay in MGNREGS wages to disabled

The State Human Rights Commission has directed Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department to submit a detailed report on People with Disabilities not given payment for the work done under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for the last six months.

Taking a suo moto cognizance over a media report that more than 500 People with Disabilities in the State have written to the government saying that their wages are due for the last six months, the commission ordered the Director and Additional Chief Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department to submit a report within 4 weeks. The commission added that they may take action as it deems fit and proper, if the government fails to submit the report. Quoting the Joint Director of the rural development, the media report said that the department’s liability is Rs 800 crore and expecting Rs 500 crore to be released by the Centre in few days and the amount would be deposited in their accounts.
