CHENNAI: The stalemate between the state government and the Raj Bhavan over the appointment of the TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission) chairman ended on Tuesday after the Tamilnadu government appointed Senior IAS officer S K Prabhakar as the chairperson of the commission that does most of the recruitment for the state government and its agencies.

Prabhakar will remain chairperson for a period of six years from the date of assumption of office or till he attains 62 years, whichever is earlier, said an order issued by state Human Resources Department, with the consent of Tamil Nadu governor. Prabhakar has held several senior positions in the state government including the office of Commissioner of Revenue Administration.

The post of TNPSC chairman remains vacant ever since the retirement of K A Balachandran in 2022. The state government had appointed commission member C Munianathan as chairman in-charge owing to the delay in appointment of a full-time chairman due to differences with the incumbent governor. The state government and Raj Bhavan were at loggerheads after Governor R N Ravi refused to accept the proposal of the government which recommended former DGP Sylendra Babu for the coveted post over a year ago. Earlier this February, the state government appointed five members for the TNPSC after a gap of three years.
