CHENNAI: After collecting the Anna Medal for Gallantry for Peter Johnson, who saved two children from drowning but died in the effort, his widow appealed to the government for a job and housing assistance.
A Jesi said she lost her husband when he rescued two young boys who were drowning in the Tamirabarani river. "My husband saved two lives, but I am now struggling to earn a livelihood with two children," she said.
Jesi said her son has completed an ITI course, while her daughter is pursuing social work through distance education. She added that she had submitted petitions to the Kanniyakumari Collectorate seeking a job under compassionate grounds and a house, but no action had been taken so far.
The incident happened on June 6, 2025, at a check dam in Kuzhithurai. Johnson noticed two youngsters slipping into the river and struggling in the strong current. Without hesitation, he jumped into the river and rescued them, but was swept away and drowned.
Recognising his selfless courage and ultimate sacrifice, Johnson was posthumously honoured with the Anna Medal for Gallantry during the Republic Day celebrations here on Monday.
