The CBI team will take over investigation from the CB-CID which has until now handled the case as per the direction of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

The CB-CID has altered the first information report (FIR) registered on the death of Jeyaraj and Bennicks as a murder case from the earlier charge of suspicious death.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Vijay Kumar Shukla who has been designated as the Investigating Officer will lead the central team and conduct investigations from scratch. The team will also interrogate police constable Revathy, a key witness in the case.

Jeyaraj and Bennicks had been booked for not closing their mobile shop in time on June 19 by the Sathankulam police. They were sent to judicial custody and lodged in the Kovilpatti jail on June 21.

Jeyaraj died on June 22 night and Bennicks on June 23 morning in judicial custody, allegedly due to the police torture.

10 police personnel have been arrested in connection with their deaths.
