Rly biz development unit tastes maiden success

Within a week since its launch, a business development unit of the Southern Railway (SR) tasted success, said a statement. The unit under the Palakkad division has earned Rs 38.55 lakh in a week, thanks to the demand to transport packaged palm oil from Mangaluru to Lucknow.

According to the statement issued by SR, the division was able to garner demand for 42 wagons of packaged palm oil from Panamburu goods shed to Mohanlalganj, located 2,500 km away near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The covered wagons ferried 2,640 tonnes of packed palm-oil, it added.

With this deal, the unit has netted an earning of Rs 33.56 lakh for the Railways, the statement said.

Business development units were launched recently with an aim to augment loading and net additional revenue in the freight segment.

Officials from the Palakkad division have been holding regular interactions with industries in Baikampady industrial area adjacent to Panamburu goods shed and New Mangalore Port. The proposal for loading packaged palm oil refined at Baikampady industrial area was the first proposal formulated by the committee and sent to the zonal level.

Railway department is gearing up to handle more transport from Panamburu area to various destinations in the country, a statement issued by SR added.
