He also urged the fishermen not to venture into coastal waters near Goa and Maharashtra as a cyclonic depression is active over the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the cyclonic storm Nisarga, which has turned into a depression in the Arabian Sea, will hit Maharashtra and Gujarat on June 3 and it is advisable for the fishermen to avoid the Arabian Sea. It may be noted that the fishermen in Kanniyakumari district have the traditional practice of long line fishing in international waters travelling up to Maharashtra coast in search of tuna, sharks, marlin, kingfish and swordfish. On Southwest monsoon, Udhayakumar said districts like The Nilgiris, Theni, Coimbatore, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli have started receiving monsoon showers.

According to Revenue Department sources, the monsoon showers in nearby Kerala and Karnataka will bring in fresh inflow into the Cauvery and Tamirabarani rivers addressing the irrigation requirements. As per the annual plan, the state had planned to open the sluices of Mettur dam on June 12 as the monsoon has set over Western Ghats spread over Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Pechiparai dam is also scheduled to be opened on June 8.
