CHENNAI: Closely on the heels of controversy around educational institutions regarding 'uniformity' in students' attire across India, a government school principal in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram caused a stir by objecting to a girl student wearing a hijab.
A new joinee in the government high school in Ramanathapuram's Sathankulam was told by the school principal not to wear hijab inside the institution. In the viral video, the student along with her mother protested asking if there is any rule restricting Muslim students from wearing hijab.
The principal went on to say this was the "practice" followed in the school and that this was clearly instructed during admission procedures.
Following this incident, an RTI was filed by a Muslim group wanting to know whether the Tamil Nadu government has prohibited wearing hijab inside schools. The response clearly stated that there was no such rule in place.
This incident has created flutter with similar issues being faced by Muslim girl students across India in several educational institutions.
