Rain subsides in catchment, inflow into Mettur dips

Inflow into Mettur dam has dipped drastically as rain subsided in Karnataka’s catchment areas. After clocking a maximum of 1.3 lakh cusecs for this monsoon season on August 9, the inflow into the dam began to reduce gradually to reach 20,000 cusecs on Wednesday 8 am.

Till Monday, the dam continued to receive an inflow of 1.3 lakh cusecs before dropping to 80,000 cusecs on Tuesday morning and further down to 40,000 cusecs in the evening. The sudden dip in the flow of water into the dam follows a sharp decline in the combined discharge from both the Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams due to receding of rains in its catchment areas.

The water realised in Hogenakkal was at 18,000 cusecs on Wednesday 8 am. However, the discharge of 10,000 cusecs of water for Delta irrigation, since August 10 evening continues. The water level in the dam hovers around 100 feet and has storage of 61,360 mcft.

An official of the PWD Department said that the dam could reach its full reservoir level of 120 feet only if another spell of good showers brings copious inflow into the reservoir. The dam has reached its full reservoir level over the last two years due to surplus discharge from Karnataka.

Also, the water storage level in Bhavanisagar dam in Erode district is at a comfortable 101.16 feet as against its full reservoir level of 105 feet on Wednesday evening. However, the inflow into the dam has been reduced to 3,428 cusecs.
