PWD assures farmers release of water in 17 Cauvery channels

Farmers have expressed their gratitude after the PWD officials agreed to release water to 17 channels of the Cauvery to irrigate around 2.2 lakh acre of land in Karur and Tiruchy districts.

Soon after the release of water from Mukkombu (Upper Anicut) in Tiruchy, the farmers belonging to Tiruchy and Karur have been demanding to release water to the 17 channels that branch in the Cauvery between Mayanur and Kallanai (Grand Anicut).

These 17 channels which are deviating from the Cauvery at Mayanur with names of Vadakarai, Thenkarai, Kattalaimedu, Uyyankondan and Ayyanvaical, which also flows to as many as six tail end blocks of Tiruchy and Karur districts where the crops including paddy, banana and vegetables are undertaken in a vast area.

The farmers who approached the PWD officials earlier were told to wait as the water discharge had to be stepped up to 10,000 cusecs from Mukkombu. However, owing to the release in Kallanai, the release of water to the channels was delayed. Subsequently, the farmers approached the officials with the withered banana crops on Monday and appealed them to release water immediately.

The officials have assured the release water to the 17 channels from Friday to Thenkarai, vadakarai, Kattalaimettu vaical and Krishnarayapuram vaical.
