CHENNAI: Avadi City Police arrested a 63-year-old man from Theni district for allegedly cheating another of Rs 64 lakh by promising his son a medical seat at a private university in Karnataka.

The arrested person was identified as K M Murugan of Kamayagoundanpatti town in Uthamapalayam Taluk, Theni.

Police said that the victim, P Kathirvan (49) of Iyyapanthangal near Porur, was looking to get his elder son into medical college. A relative of Kathiravan had introduced him to the arrested person, stating that he could get him a seat in Manipal university.

Kathiravan had met the accused personally and paid an amount of about Rs 64 lakh between May 2019 and August 2019.

However, after receiving the money, Murugan kept on dodging Kathiravan whenever he questioned about the seat and did not get it as promised.

Kathiravan filed a complaint with the Chennai city police and the case was transferred to the Avadi city police.

A special team of central crime branch arrested Murugan on Thursday. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Police are investigating if the arrested person is involved in similar cheating incidents.
