Post rain forecast, Min says ready for emergencies

Ahead of the heavy rainfall forecast by the IMD from Monday onwards due to a low pressure in the Bay, as many as 4,133 vulnerable places have been identified in parts of Tamil Nadu and precautionary measures are in place, said RB Udhayakumar, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management on Sunday.

He said every district in the state has come up with vulnerable location maps in four categories to tackle rain emergencies. Talking to reporters in Madurai after reviewing monsoon preparedness, the Minister said as many as 4,713 temporary relief camp shelters have been kept ready closer to low lying areas and unsafe locations with basic facilities ready.

As part of COVID-19 precautionary measures, a total of 4,680 centres have been arranged additionally in educational institutions, wedding halls and community halls. Moreover, 43,000 first respondents are also on alert to render assistance, if required.

Meanwhile, he said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was the protector of social justice citing reference to 7.5 per cent reservation implemented by state government to students from Government schools for admission to MBBS and BDS based on their NEET results. Except for Tamil Nadu, no other state has made such a remarkable achievement for the benefit of students, especially the poor. With this, economically poor students could access 313 MBBS seats and 92 BDS seats in Tamil Nadu, he added.
