A special leave petition filed by Senthil Arumugam, general secretary of the Satta Panchayat Iyakkam, sought an urgent hearing before the CJI before January 2 seeking deferring of the counting of votes in the rural local body elections till polls are held to the urban local bodies.

The plea contended that the publication of results now would affect the voting in the urban local body elections to be held later.
