Citing the order issued by the Central government, Director of Public Health K Kolandasamy, in his circular dated January 18, said that the rescheduled date of the campaign would be communicated soon. Even though the country has not reported polio case in many years, the health ministry has been conducting intensified pulse polio immunisation (IPPI) campaigns across the country from January to March every year. A communication from the Immunisation Division of Health Ministry cited “unavoidable circumstances” for the postponement.

The Chennai Corporation, on January 28 and March 11 in 2018, had administered polio vaccine to 7.49 lakh and 6.70 lakh children respectively.
