Plastics ban: Traders’ assn meets Minister

A delegation of plastic manufacturers and traders, which met State Environment Minister K C Karuppannan on Tuesday, said the latter has assured them that plastic covers used for packing would be exempted from the state-wide ban currently in force.

A group of traders attached to Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, and plastic manufacturers met Karuppannan in his office in the Secretariat and held discussions with him. During the talks, they demanded the minister to exempt certain categories of plastic products from the ban.


After the meeting, Vikramaraja, President, Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, said the minister has assured them that orders would be passed immediately to exempt certain types of plastics from the ban.


“He gave us 15 days’ time to exhaust all the plastic covers used for packing and then asked the plastic manufacturers to print the name of the plastic manufacturers on top of the plastic cover for easier identification,” said Vikramaraja.


The delegation demanded that High Molecular (HM) plastics be exempted from the ban. The State government should also allow plastic manufacturers based in Tamil Nadu to send plastic covers to neighbouring States.
