Petrol bombs hurled at Edappadi police station in Salem

Forensic experts along with police officials visited the spot and conducted preliminary investigations.

CHENNAI: A 20 year old youth has been arrested for hurling a petrol bomb at Edappadi police station in Salem on Tuesday early morning hours.

The accused, identified by police as P Adithya, a lorry cleaner from ‘Old’ Edappadi area was picked up from a hideout by special teams of police after an intensive search.

“He confessed to the crime with an intention to become popular. He filled petrol in two beer bottles and lit it before hurling at the police station around 4am,” said an official, privy to the investigation.

The cops, who were on guard doused the fire, but couldn’t find anyone in the vicinity. Three special teams were formed and CCTV images in the locality were scrutinized to trace down the accused.

Salem Superintendent of Police AK Arun Kabilan visited the station and supervised the search operation. This incident triggered a backlash from opposition political parties with AIADMK leader ‘Edappadi’ K Palaniswami raising the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.
