Petition against Jayalalithaa house as memorial dismissed

Even as the State government informed the Madras High Court on Wednesday that it is considering the conversion of the Poes Garden residence of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as the CM’s official residence and not as a memorial, a single judge dismissed a plea moved by the residents of the area, challenging the acquisition proceedings of the property for converting it into a memorial.

Justice Anand Venkatesh dismissed the plea as premature and based on mere apprehensions. “Converting a residence into a memorial is not something new and had happened in cases of various leaders who had earned the love and respect of people,” he said.

He further noted that the apprehension of the Poes Garden Kasturi Estate House Owners’ Association that a large population is going to visit the memorial and cause hardship to the residents itself show that the association is aware of the fact that the late leader has a large following.
