Performance of govt school students in NEET improves by 11% in 2022

While the overall pass percentage of all the students appearing for NEET dropped by almost 6 percent from 57.4 percent in 2021 to 51.2 percent in 2022, the performance of government school students has improved, he claimed.

CHENNAI: As many as 17,972 students from government and government aided schools registered for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year, of which 12,840 appeared and 4,447 students cleared the exam , School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said on Monday.

While the overall pass percentage of all the students appearing for NEET dropped by almost 6 percent from 57.4 percent in 2021 to 51.2 percent in 2022, the performance of government school students has improved, he claimed.

The pass percentage of government school students stands at 35 percent this year. In 2021, as many as 8,061 students had written the examination, while 1,957 cleared the exam. The pass percentage has improved in the State this year from 24.27 percent in 2021 to 35 percent this year.

In Chennai, as many as 172 candidates appeared for the examination, of which 104 passed it. Last year, 480 students registered and 130 of them passed the exam. Several districts including Virudhunagar, Salem, the Nilgiris, Perambalur, Madurai and Villupuram recorded almost 100 percent pass percentage for government school students.

The students are given 7.5 percent quota for admission to medical colleges in the State.

In 2021, nearly 400 students were admitted to medical colleges under the 7.5 percent reservation for government students in the State. As many as 1,42,894 students registered for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Tamil Nadu and 1,32,167 students appeared for the exam in the State. Of the total students who appeared for the exam, 67,787 students from Tamil Nadu have qualified.
