VELLORE: Lack of action against sub-registrars flouting government norms in registering land documents and calling on parties to come for enquiry with relevant documents despite such documents being submitted, has started to irk Gudiyattam residents.

According to Gudiyattam-based lawyer K Mohan, “though the Registration Act is clear about action to be taken on documents registered in violation of sections 22A and 22B of the Act, the registering public are put to unnecessary hardship by the sub-registrar’s office. It asks for documents in duplicate to be sent to the office by registered post despite the same being submitted to the office earlier.”

In one case, a document revealed that 5 cents land in survey number 281B/3B in Gudiyattam taluk’s Ramalai village was purchased by one R Jeeva in November 2019. But, when it was registered the 5 cents became 2.40 acres, which included land belonging to S Gandhi of the village. When the latter lodged a complaint and sought cancellation of the registration, he was asked to submit relevant documents on or before December 12, 2022. “Though Gandhi heeded the order and submitted the documents to the district registrar, there has been no action till date and neither has the registration been cancelled,” Mohan added.

In another case, Dr R Srikanth, who along with relatives owned a piece of land in Gudiyattam town’s Dharnampet bazaar, found that one of the partners had sold away a portion of the land. “Though the issue involved two court cases and all relevant documents were provided, no action has been taken by the district registrar to cancel the ‘wrong’ registration,” Srikanth told DT Next.

“I was present when Srikanth personally handed over the documents to the district registrar (DR) who went through them and said all was in order and that action will be taken to cancel them soon,” Vellore District Consumer Federation president K Sathiyamoorthy said. “However, till date no action has been initiated,” he added.

Repeated attempts to contact District Registrar Sudaroli were of no avail.
