The couple, Meena from Nainampatty, near Attayampatty, and her husband Raja made the sensational complaint against own parents, who were opposed to their love affair.

“As parents were against our love affair, we eloped and got married in a temple in November 2017,” she said in the petition. After the marriage, the couple, both relatives, moved to Tirupur and worked in a textile firm.

In June, Meena delivered a baby boy at Tirupur Government Hospital. As her health condition deteriorated, the woman was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Then the parents of the woman visited her and also took her to a private hospital in Salem for further treatment. “My parents spun a story that both my husband and baby had died. They took me to the house, where I was kept locked for about two months. They also did not allow me to step out of the house,” she said.

Meanwhile, Meena was shocked to know from her relatives that her parents had sold her baby. “My parents sold my baby for Rs 3 lakh to a person from Villupuram,” she alleged.

A month ago, Meena managed to escape from her house and rejoined her husband in Tirupur district. The couple alleged that despite submitting a complaint at Attayampatty police station, there was no action. They also raised fear of threats for their life from their families.

The Salem Collector received the petition and promised to hold an inquiry into the incident.
